Rough and Smooth: Ho! For an Australian Gold Field. Reviews
The Canadian Campbells took six months from when their ship was supposed to leave New York (October 1852) to when they set foot in Melbourne: two months wallowing to Rio, set ashore under difficult circumstances (the skipper was a crook, on thier version of it), and then to Melbourne on a nervous Dutch East Indiaman whose skipper hove to, every night. The stepped ashore on April 3, 1853, and as a lawyer, Campbell got a job as a Gold Commissioner. There is good general background on goldfields life near Beechworth, some details of prices and conditions: a good general account. My copy came as a Google Books pdf file. It's a keeper!
