"She had promised herself that she would see the trees taller than God her father had talked about so often." Maya's mother married a young man with plenty of dreams but no money, and he was too young and carefree to support all those children they conceived together in love. Now they are all dead and Maya is on her own and ready to start a new life in California - but she learned her lesson well - she'll marry an older man financially set in life so her babies won't die of hunger (she is not out for a rich husband for her own benefit).Traveling on her own to California isn't without its challenges, but Maya is thisclose and the ship she's on wrecks on a sandbar, but she's saved by the ever-so-handsome but much-too-young Will Hawthorne. Well, you guessed it. Will isn't quite seventeen and very much dependent on his lumber-baron father's support and as much as she loves Will (and oh, does he love her), they can never be and boy, does she ever break his heart when he assumes the worst about her. Sob."Loss of control had cost him five years of his life. He would never lose control again."That's all from the first few chapters, and I won't go further, but this was a great revenge story and IMO very well done with lots of tension, but no never-ending Big Misunderstanding either. I loved the northern California setting among the redwoods (such awesome trees), and how the author worked the logging industry into the story. I don't want to give much away, but there were some real nail-biting moments. This is a romance novel, so be prepared for some sex. It wasn't icky-squicky, but it is more detailed than some readers care for, but it wasn't overdone like rabbits on every page either. YMMV, you can pass this or skim.
The novel was written in 1987. The story of a woman who believed in her mother's view of marriage and children so much that she nearly destroyed herself in the process. But people paid with their lives in more ways than death.
Read this quite a while ago. This reminded me of the sweeping sagas of which TV miniseries are made. It was a bit to Soapy for my taste. Full of secrets, betrayals, rags to riches, etc.
A saga. Why do e-books have so many typos? It's ridiculous! It really disturbs your reading
