Out of Turns Reviews
I found it randomly at the library and it didn't disappoint. Great story!
Fifth grade teacher Figgy Newton visits Taiwan to see her old roommate, independent Tessa. But Tessa is called away on an overnight business trip, and doesn't come back. Alone in a strange city, where she doesn't know the language, FIggy turns to a chance-met acquaintance from her flight to Hong Kong and asks for his help. Soon she finds out that she's tangling with forces way, way out of her league. But she can't go home until she knows that Tessa is safe.
Nancy Drew in Taiwan, for grown-ups...if you're an ultra-conservative Pollyanna. Gosh darn, the heroine only drinks the occasional beer and is a Steelers fan (hence the reason to drink a beer), the good looking knight in shining armor opens her doors, and chastely kisses her goodnight on the cheek. Night after night. The bad guys never swear, and in the end promise to be good. Better suited for 4th graders.
I think this is a great bone chilling mystery about how Figgy's friend Terra disappears mysteriously because of a worthless jade horse that Mr.Chu is too proud to let them not insurance it.Out of turns is a great book about a american foreigner who has to find a way to find her friend and get her back safely-without getting killed.
I unfortunately am not able to finish this book at this time. I was a victim of a "smash and grab" where some douche bag broke my car windows to get my backpack. The out of system library book will likely cost me a $115 lost fine.On to the review. This little gem reads like a Cozy. Since I was only 2/3 through the story, I do not know if that changes. Although I thoroughly enjoyed the dialogue between characters, I did find some of the body language descriptions andFiggy's observationd a bit cliche. I.E. His smile did not match his eyes. I truly enjoyed the author's colorful vivid descriptions of Taiwan. I really felt like I was amidst the throngs of people, venders, and buildings smelling the street foods and pollution.
