The Betrayers: Joachim And Caroline Murat Reviews
I'll admit it: my professor gave us a list of books to choose from for an assignment, and I was the last one that got to choose. Consequently, this was one of the last books on the list and not one of the ones that I wanted to read. But now that I've read it, I am so glad that it's the one that I got stuck with.Joachim Murat is one of those rare historic figures that can accurately be romanticized. He truly was a knight in shining armor when it came to French history. Sure, he wasn't perfect, but he was everything that you love to read about. He was chivalrous, he was brave, he was handsome, and despite getting wrapped up in the Napoleonic Empire, I really got the feeling that he was a good person and a born king. As for Caroline, reading about her was like reading about Claire Underwood from House of Cards. The only difference was the timing of the situation. She was fiercely intelligent and knew exactly how to get her way. She ran an entire kingdom while Joachim ran around jumping into battles and leading troops. She managed the ever-temperamental Napoleon and might have even orchestrated Napoleon's divorce from Josephine. Who knew?I'm shocked that history teachers don't have much to say about Joachim and Caroline, because based off of what I learned in this one book alone, there's a lot to talk about. I would highly recommend The Betrayers to anyone with an interest in French history.
