    Koleksi surat-surat dari dan kepada Raffles yang ditulis antara 1780 dan 1823 memberikan pandangan yang pelbagai terhadap suasana yang berlaku pada penghujung abad ke-18. Ketika itu British dan Belanda masing-masing bersaing untuk mendapatkan kekuasaan di alam Melayu. Surat-surat yang dihantar oleh Raffles kepada sultan, raja dan pembesar kerajaan menampakkan keinginan secara mendalam yang cukup tersirat, bahawa hajat sebenar Kompeni adalah mahu menduduki kerajaan dan merebut hasil mahsul yang terkandung di dalamnya. Atas tujuan itu, surat-surat yang tertulis mengandungi nada sedih kerana tertipu/ditipu oleh helah yang tidak disedari, rayuan kerana telah dijatuhkan hukum, permohonan bantuan bagi mengusir kedatangan orang asing, misalnya Siam di Kedah atau lanun di laut, dan bantuan bagi menyelesaikan masalah peribadi melibatkan kuasa, takhta dan wang. Surat-surat ini mendekatkan kita kepada sejarah dan situasi pada masa itu, memberi kita peluang membaca isi hati penulis dan penerima warkah serta menilai kesan-kesan yang berlaku selepas itu.
