Parts of it stretched plausibility but it was gripping.

10/31/2017 ** Jake is a bike rider training to become a member of the USA cycling team. He sees a group of people crashing a plane from the ground and they want him dead. The book has a strong supporting cast of Jake's girl friend, Laurissa, and the alternate narrator, Betsy. They are all everyday kids thrust into a life and death situation, and their story helps us see how we can each step up to be a hero if necessary. This book is primarily a thriller, with a fast-paced plot and several twists. However, it also explores issues of race and class through the relationship between Jake (white, working class) and Laurissa (African-American, wealthy). Likewise, through Betsy's eyes, we see what it might be like to be raised in a racist, xenophobic household and what it might be like to shift one's perspective and become more open-minded about others.Fans of the Ashfall series (also by Mike Mullin) will not be disappointed. Likewise, readers who enjoy James Patterson will want to try this book.Note: I am the wife of the author and have read numerous drafts of this manuscript.

Jake is a bike rider, who really wants to make it into the professional circuit. But that is not really what the story is about. The story is about how Jake saw a terrorist group crash an airplane; however, due to the actions of said terrorist group, Jake does not remember what he saw. But they don't care, they still want him dead. Oh, and to add interest, no one is really sure that the plane crash really was a terrorist attack, because no one can figure out why the plane crashed. The adventure is how Jake slowly recovers his memories, but are his memories accurate? And, how Jake is treated by his mom, his girlfriend, his fellow bike riders, the police, and the FBI. All the while the terrorists are trying to come up with ways to kill him, without making it too obvious that someone wants him dead. The story telling is split between Jake and Betsy (one of the terrorists), both of whom are teenagers. The story is engaging, held my interest, and is a very excellent young adult book. And, yes, you do learn how the plane was crashed, and from what I can tell, it is based on a scientific theory that is quite plausible.I read this book as an ARC with the plain black cover.

I received an ARC copy from the author.Surface Tension is a thriller by the author, Mike Mullin, of the Ashfall Series. This fast-paced read will leave guessing at what is around the next corner. You are along for the journey and you will find yourself connecting puzzle pieces as you go. {As a librarian, I love the addition of library visits as the characters seek refuge, information and humanity.} Characters are well-developed and the plot is quick and realistic. Jake, Laurissa and Betsy's lives take twists and turns that even adults couldn't handle. Multiple viewpoints that are timely and relevant. Yet another impressive novel by Mike Mullin! Recommend to teens and adults seeking adventure and a thrilling ride!

This wasn't my usual genre, but I was immediately interested in Betsy's point of view, as it's something I haven't read before. It was one of those books that was really hard to put down. There were a few places where I had to suspend my disbelief, but overall a fun read.

Wow. This book was action packed and suspenseful. It kept reminding of Ashfall. It kept me on the edge of my seat the entire time. I definitely recommend reading this book.

Realistic teen-age characters, a plot that is maybe a bit too realistic. Interesting to read about bike racing - my husband used to do long-distance challenges, so I have a peripheral interest in the subject. Thought Jake was very clever and motivated to be willing to put training wheels on his bike when he needed to re-learn riding after a bad injury. It was brave to decide that he cared enough about riding to put up with the teasing. I read this as an ARC, with a plain black cover, which I thought was way cool. Have seen an image of the real cover - even cooler! See Mike Mullin's Face Book page for a look at that cover.
