I first read this book years ago in high school at the library and loved it. Years later, I decided to reread it and I still loved it. A fragile city trapped under its planet's heavy gravity; a seemingly simple alien species on a distant habitable world; the unwanted truths glimpsed by the survey ship Far Cry; and the protagonist on a journey to uncover his sister's killer. It all makes for a wonderful story. To quote the book's cover, "Who will survive when the hammer falls?"

Although a bit of a slow start, I grew to like this story, though I never loved it. The world he has set up is believable, and the characters are well done, but it took me a while to care about them and what happened to them. It has just enough of a mystery to it, why did his sister die and who caused it - to make it interesting. But, the main character, Gabriel is not someone you really like or care about. Nice pacing, good backstory and perhaps someone else would be more in synch with the character than me.

Anvil (1998) set on a world similar to Earth, where his sister's mysterious disappearance impels the protagonist into a noir investigation of the corrupt central City run on Dystopian lines by a savage elite. The high-tech mise en scene is intricately realized.
