In The Pinkerton Man, Stiles Langberry is a constable with the Scotland Yard. He finds himself in a precarious position when someone tries to blackmail him. It seems like the blackmailer is trying to get money from Stiles, even though his lover is now dead. It’s lucky for Stiles that when his sergeant finds out about the situation, he gives Stiles some sound advice—Stiles is now on a voyage to America where he meets a young lady by the name of Elizabeth “Lizzie” Ferguson, and they become good friends.Stiles has now changed his last name to Long, and he’s applied to the Pinkerton Agency in St. Louis. His first case is a possible serial murderer and will introduce him to a young man by the name of Paul.In Home on the Range, Lizzie gets to join Stiles on his next case to Mercer, Wyoming, to the Circle W ranch. Someone has been poisoning cattle on the ranch, and Stiles is there to solve the crime. He comes across Savage Beare, the big ranch foreman, and there’s something about this man that has Stiles attracted to him.In the first story, The Pinkerton Man, I started out liking Stiles, then I had some doubts about him, but as he faces another tragedy, you can feel his emotions, and his loneliness starts to come through. I found Lizzie to be an interesting character also. Not only is she a great friend to Stiles, but she’s a good detective. Both of them learn that people wear masks and have something to hide. There’s definitely more to come as they both come across a newspaper article about a murder at a boarding school. So far, the Pinkerton Man series is entertaining, well written and easy to follow as C.J. Baty takes us back to the old west, to the year 1895. Both storylines are suspenseful, action packed and the characters are great. This series has a lot of potential, and I can only see it getting better. I am so looking forward to the next mystery in this series by C.J. Baby.Reviewed by Maryann for The Novel Approach Reviews

The Pinkerton Man: 2 stars(view spoiler)[So we aren't given the answer to the question of who killed these young men, and instead we got a sort of threesome/voyeurism between Stiles, Paul (who later become a victim), and a previous murder suspect?!?! GAAHH!!!! I am frustrated and disappointed! (hide spoiler)]Home of the Range: DNF after Chapter 2(view spoiler)[Because only chapter 2, early in, and Stiles had sex with practically a stranger he met on the train (hide spoiler)]. Not what I am expecting when I bought this, as I thought it would be pure mystery (with minimal sex scenes). Again frustrated.Rating based on story #1 alone. On that note: maybe I need to stop looking for 'mystery' in what is marketed as MM Mystery these days. They tend to leave bad taste in my mouth because I feel like it's more romance/sex/erotica than the mystery/investigation part. Or maybe I just stumble into wrong books most of the times *hmph*

This book is made up of two novellas that are both great. The novella sets up the series and how the main character came to the Pinkerton Detective Agency. Both stories quickly pulled me in and had me wanting to know what will happen next. I really like the characters and like getting to know more about the main character. I look forward to reading more in this series! I received a copy of this book from the author. My review has been voluntarily submitted.

Welcome to the wild west . Stiles Langberry decides to leave Scotland yard after he is being blackmailed. In book one is like a prologue where we get to meet the characters and get to know more about Stiles . It is a short fast paced book that will keep you reading . The introduction to the characters is well developed and you will have a giggle or two along the way .In book two of the series , I absolutely adored , it read like an old western . With cattle herds , ranch hands and oh yeah horses . Stiles is sent there to figure out who is poisoning the cattle herd . There he meets a cast of characters . One in particular Savage a strong hot ranch forman who is more then what he seems . Lizzie is back and undercover as a cook and maid to the ranch hands . Where the guys are fighting to keep her safe . The story reads fast and you will get sucked into the story. I will warn you there is lots of m/m sex in this book also . Which was written very well . It didn't hold up the story at all . This author is new to me and I will be looking at more of her books

This is a detective book with a twist. Stiles, the lead detective, is a gay man who had to move and stat a new life because he was being blackmailed. He decides to apply to the Pinkertons. There is murder, jealousy, sex, and mystery all rolled up in one. I really enjoyed these 2 books and I would definitely follow along with this series to see more about his cases along with his partner Lizzie. Maybe we can see more about Lizzie in future books. He is a gay man so expect M/M interaction. Can't wait to see what happens next.Voluntarily reviewed an ARC of this book

I've not read this author before AND I normally dont read M/M but I do sometimes so gave it a try! I was NOT disappointed. Its written very well and honestly kept my attention. Now this is a mystery but not everything is solved as of yet. This is erotic and there are sexy times so be warned. Doesnt bother me in the least but it might some. I cant wait to read more. I very much enjoyed Stiles' character and loved Lizzie. Intriguing characters and both stories I loved. I'm definitely putting more of CJ's books on my TBR shelves.

After being black mailed Stiles decides to reevaluate his life and makes a drastic change which throws him into a whole other world. I have read books along this general idea but this is the first time I have seen it go this way when it goes to the brothel and then investigation and it was interesting. The book has some twists you won't expect and a few you may. A general good read.

I enjoyed going along the character's journey to solve the mystery. I always enjoy a good mystery. I wish there was a little more build up and depth and not so much focus on the various relationships the character had.I voluntarily reviewed an arc from the author.

Very period-correct depiction. Those who didn't fit the mold required in that era walked a fine line. No matter how well they did their job. No matter the quality of their character. Judgement and bigotry played consistent parts in how their life choices. Yet they persevered.

I thoroughly enjoyed Stiles' story. Very well written, it's full of palpable tension, suspense, and adventure. I look forward to more in this series as there is still an unsolved mystery.

*** Copy provided to Bayou Book Junkie in exchange for a fair and honest review. ***The Pinkerton ManStiles was living an almost perfect life. Working for Scotland Yard and engaged in a secret relationship with a Viscount, until someone started blackmailing them and the Viscount ended up killing himself. When the blackmailer outed him to his superior, it was decided Stiles would do better if he moved away and he ended up in St. Louis working as a Pinkerton Agent on the trail of a murderer, but can Stiles catch him before he strikes again? This was a very nice setup to a larger series. It's set in 1895, so it was nice to see the differences in how gay men were treated at that time. It's not as much a romance, even if we have some steamy sex between Stiles and Paul and a very interesting case that Stiles has to investigate. My only complaint is that we didn't really get a resolution, but other that that it was a very interesting read! Home on the RangeStiles and his fellow Pinkerton agent and friend, Lizzie, have to go undercover to the Circle W Ranch to investigate who's killing their cattle. They have quite a few suspects, one of which is one of the most handsome, rugged men Stiles has ever seen, the ranch's foreman, Savage Beare. I love Stiles, he's such a fascinating character. He's strong and resilient, in a very understated way and has this dry sense of humor that I just adore. This series is not quite a romance, but again, the author gives us a few hot scenes between Stiles and some of the suspects other characters. I really liked the idea of Stiles and Savage together, they were so different in some senses, yet similar in another and there was great chemistry between them. All in all, this was a great continuation to the series; it has mystery and suspense and an intriguing plotline that kept me riveted from start to finish. I'll be looking forward to more Pinkerton Man adventures in the future!Rating: 4 Stars!!!

Overall, I wanted more from these stories. To me, they seemed to have bits missing that maybe two separate, longer books might have covered. They were fine and quite engaging but could have been so much more.Book 1 - poor Paul! I felt like chunks of the story had been cut out and I do think that a longer in depth treatment would have been really good. I guess the solving of these murders will be an ingoing theme in the stories, not one quickly solved.Book 2 - I felt a bit lost at the start as I am sure we didn't get to know why Lizzie and Stiles had been sent to the Circle W. The mystery of why the cattle were being killed was a long time coming but the culprit was fairly easy to guess - it was just a question of how many accomplices he had.

** 4.5 Stars **C.J. Baty's Pinkerton Man introduces us to Stiles Long (formerly Stiles Langberry who had to reinvent himself abroad for his own safety) with two distinct Western suspense/mysteries.Book One begins with a sort of prologue that presents the protagonist and other characters. It gives some interesting background information and it continues with a short and compact but very satisfying crime/mystery that takes place in a male brothel.Book Two is twice longer and it reads very much like an old western. This novel is not a love story but it has danger, adventure, friendship and just the right amount of hot sex! There's also a strong female character but I won't say more! The author did a great job of bringing me back into the Lawless Old West and I'm very much looking forward to reading the next Pinkerton Man, as announced, later in 2016. I hope it's going to be a long Series!!

I love a good mystery. These two books are full to the brim and keep you on your toes with clues. You just think you know who's the good guys and who's the bad, and then everything changes again.I would love to see more of Savage Bare I mean Beare (honest I did), he was a great character, but I sensed there was a lot to learn about him than could be put into this one book.Stiles is great, although, he does seem to have terrible taste in some of his choices in men. He really should listen to his gut more and not his...Yes, well.I would highly recommend this series and am looking forward to reading more.

The Pinkerton Man is a captivating crime/mystery tale. The suspense is balanced well against Stiles' romantic entanglements and he comes across as a well-rounded character with whom the reader can relate.Disclaimer: I was involved in the production of this title.
