I can sum up Soaring Hearts for you in a single word: sweet. Everything about this story comes back to that for me-the characters, the storyline, the overall feel-and even as much as it is sweet, there's still a tiny bit of spice to keep things fun. It's a wonderful romance that will leave you feeling good and with a smile on your face. The setting of the Albuquerque Balloon Fiesta gives us a lovely setting that will have you imagining the magnificent hot air balloons rising into the sky, setting the backdrop for Jeff and Alex's relationship to evolve. Alex has been hurt-both physically and emotionally-and he tries to hide himself from others due to his physical scars. But his job has him working with the public, so we get to watch as he comes out of his shell-and opens up to newcomer Jeff who is starting over after his own personal tragedy. The two of them together just feels right, and I love how Jeff is with Alex-very aware of what Alex needs and his reluctance to let others see his scars. Jeff is very protective of Alex, and in turn Alex feels safe with Jeff.I really liked watching things develop between the two of them. The story is relatively low-angst for the most part, but with a bit of drama thrown in at just the right point to pull the two of them closer together. Soaring Hearts is the kind of story you want to read when you need a bit of a pick-me-up, and Jeff and Alex's story will warm your heart. This was a 4-star read for me, and I'd recommend it to any M/M romance fan 18+ (while mostly sweet, there's a small amount of spice thrown in for good measure).

Soaring Hearts is a sweet love story of two lost and scarred souls. This is only my second A.L. Boyd story but I feel it's safe to say I know what to expect from her writing now. It pretty much has vanilla flavour. Other than the mentions of past darkness - on both character's side - the book offered only goodness on present day: coffee (that a must), a turned-to-klepto jealous dog, food (spicy food, too!), kids, music, and of course romance with a dash of sexy times. What interest me here was the premises, a Balloon Fiesta. The author's account on this event had me longing to visit one - cue in the festival food and attractions - or look for a movie with one. That the characters are both likeable contributed to the story, too. Their attraction was instantaneous and smooth sailing. Even the secondary ones who floated in and out of the pages - let's discount the mention of evil ex - are all good and supportive. So yeah, it's sweet and quite a tame story with predictable ending. But if you're of a mind of an uncomplicated reading with guaranteed happy ending, you might not need to look further than this. :)I received a free copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

I was given a copy of this book free by the author in return for an unbiased review.Jeff is at the Balloon Fiesta with his sister and brother in law when he meets ALex, who is reporting fron the fiesta for the radio station he works for. The 2 hit it off and spend the rest of the week together. Alex is nervous about being around Jeff as he had a bad experience which had left him scarred on his neck and down his arms and chest.I liked this story. Jeff was very accepting of ALex despite his scars. Spending time together their relationship evolves over time. I loved seeing the two of them with Alex's niece and nephew. An enjoyable read which made me want to go to the balloon fiesta.

4 stars** I received a copy in exchange for an honest review through the DBML program**In Soaring Hearts, Jeff accompanies his sister and her husband to a balloon festival in New Mexico. He meets Alex when he decides to interview Jeff for the radio station that he works for. Alex has trust body image issues due to a traumatizing event that left half his body scarred.Over the course of the weeklong festival, Alex learns that not everyone is heartless and that Jeff may be his chance at a happy, loving future. I quite enjoyed this book. If you are in the mood for a book that is fast paced and has a HEA, then this would be a good bet. This book is pure fluff and is best read with a mug of hot cocoa and marshamallows. In terms of sexual content, this book was on the lower end. Yes, there were a few steamy scenes, but they didn’t dominate the story and the character development. And really if there had been much more it would have gone into “porn” territory. The two knew each other for about a week so I would have been against any insta-love sex scenes. Granted the general plot does center around insta-love, but I didn’t really notice. That is a testament to how well Boyd wrote this novel. (view spoiler)[Also, when Alex tells Jeff that his ex-boyfriend tried to murder him, I was all set for the ending to be a typical “boyfriend gets out of prison and comes back to “take whats his”” type of deal. I can’t tell you how happy I was to see that this wasn’t the case. (hide spoiler)]My only issue with this book was Jeff’s accident. The way it happened was very abrupt and I actually re-read the scene a few times just to make sense of why it happened in the first place. (view spoiler)[And what are the odds that when Jeff finally decides that he wants to tell Alex that he loves him, he would have to have his jaw wired and can’t say the words to his liking? (hide spoiler)] It just felt very forced, like a plot device rather than the natural progression of a story.Final notes:This is mentioned in the synopsis, but there are mentions of both physical and mental abuse (domestic abuse)This book is told in third person.

3.75 stars for a short sweet read!I received a free copy of this book in exchange for an honest review through the Goodreads Don't By my Love program.Soaring Hearts is set at Albuquerque Balloon Fiesta in New Mexico. Alex Mullen is a young man working as a reporter covering the festival for his family owned radio station. Alex is physically and emotionally scarred by an accident. This leads him to avoid interactions and certainly relationships with other guys because he assumes that they will reject him for his physical flaws.Jeff Bowen is attending the festival to help his sister and brother in law who are participants in the festival. He has recently decided to leave his home in California after a fire took the lives of his parents.Alex meets Jeff when he interviews him for the radio station. Alex impulsively invites Jeff to attend some of the festival events with him.Alex is amazed that Jeff can see beyond his scars. This is a short story and though the the story has hot moments, the flow seems natural. The story doesn't have a lot of action, with one exception which seems forced. The story is built around shared meals, music, movies and festival events. Alex eventually shares the story behind his scars and reveals himself physically to Jeff. This is a HEA with a big dose of sweetness and a little well done heat.My only complaint in an otherwise bliss filled read were the nefarious circumstances surrounding Alex's injury and the seemingly thrown in accident Jeff is involved in.

** I received a copy in exchange for an honest review through the DBML program**I loved this book. A great light read to cheer you up when you're having a bad day or week or month. The characters are both healing from different hurts and slowly learning how to get over these and slowly fall in love. I loved how these two acted around Alex's niece and nephew and would love to get more of an insight into these characters and how their love is going.

I was given a free copy of this by the author in exchange for an honest review. The story starts with Jeff helping his sister and brother-in-law to get their off the ground at the Albuquerque Balloon Fiesta. While he’s waiting around for them, Alex comes up to interview him. Alex works as a reporter for his parents who own a local radio station. Alex and Jeff hit it off from the start and Alex asks Jeff to hang out with him later that day to watch some of the bands at the festival. He cleverly hides his side with his scars from Jeff and he wears gloves so Jeff can’t see his hands. Alex is scared of anyone new seeing his scars because anytime a new guy sees them, they quickly make an excuse to ditch him. Jeff is different though and when he does see them, he’s not horrified and although curious, he leaves it to Alex to decide when to tell him about them. Alex can’t believe he’s found someone who doesn’t care about his scars. It still takes him some time to work up the courage to show the scars or tell Jeff how he got them. Both of them have a lot of baggage and tragedy in their past so they have a lot in common that they can connect with. The book takes place over the week and is their courtship of them just getting to know each other. It’s very sweet watching the two fall in love. The secondary characters round the story out. They are funny and interesting themselves. The story is well written and the dialogue flows naturally. I don’t recall many other stories that feature hot air balloon festivals so it has a unique feel to it, and that I liked. I would recommend this to anyone who would like an uncomplicated story with two sweet guys looking to fall in love.

When Jeff attends a Alberquque balloon feista with his brother in law and sister he's just looking forward to helping them set up their balloon and just spending time with them. He also has to break it to his sister that he won't be returning to California with her and her husband and will be remaining in Alberquque to start anew after the death of their parents.Alex works for his family news station. He had big dreams to be a news caster but those were dashed quite unexpectedly by his ex. So now he spends his time interviewing and meeting with vendors as part of his job. When he sees Jeff he thinks it'll be great to get an outsiders opinion about the fiesta. When the two meet, the last thing they expect is to feel the curl of attraction that immediately hits them. Alex has been burned before and is cautious about starting a relationship or even dating. But there's just something about Jeff that Alex can't help but give in to.I love this story. It was such a sweet and easy story to breeze through. Alex being hurt and finding the strength to keep going and taking a chance was quite inspiring. I was totally rooting for him and Jeff despite his misgivings. I really loved Jeff for looking beyond physical appearances. I loved that Jeff never pushed for anything and let Alex do things at his own comfort. I loved that the two built up their relationship and spent quality time together. There wasn't a character in this book I didn't like, well with the exception of Ryan, that guy while only mentioned was a jackass. I was glad to find out that he couldn't hurt Alex anymore. I hope the author decides to revisit these two again or at the very least give Ruben a story of his own. He was such a good friend to Alex and I liked that he was cool with Jeff. *A free copy was proved to me in exchange for an honest review.

    * This book was provided for free by the author in exchange for an honest review *It was the first book by this author for me and I liked the story but unfortunately it didn't sweep me off my feet. I loved the blurb, but the story itself was only a 3.5 star read. The story about two sad and lonely guys searching for love and comfort might not be very original, but it definitely had a potential. I adored both MCs - Jeff, scarred both physically and mentally, treated badly by strangers and afraid of rejection was my absolute favorite, but Jeff isn't far behind. They both have terrible past, they both want to start over and all it takes for them to meet each other is a balloon festival. Yes, I liked them. Yes, they seemed to be nice guys, but did I feel any REAL chemistry between them? Not really. Sure, they had fun together and I can easily see them as friends. Good friends, but there was no sexual tension. They were dancing, going to concerts, eating together and thinking about each other but that's it. It was more like the author SAID they were into each other , not actually showed it. it felt forced. It was TOO SWEET. It was nauseatingly sweet to be honest and the end was just ridiculous (view spoiler)[ (two rings? seriously? do everybody has to see it? can't he just wear it like all other people in the world?).(hide spoiler)]If someone's looking for a little, lovely read before bed it is perfect. Plus, I think the writing style was pretty good, it was easy to read even though it felt a little rushed and I would appreciate it if there was some more info about at least Alex's past instead of just mentioning some things. Overall, it was a pleasurable read but nothing memorable.

“If the center is rotten, no amount of fancy icing will make it better.”Alex and Jeff are both healing from pain and loss. Alex was badly burned on half of his upper body. Jeff lost his parents in a wildfire. Both wanting to find more then one night stands. Alex interviews Jeff during the air balloon festival that is held every year in Albuquerque. The two hit it off and both start going to the festival concerts every evening. Jeff really likes Alex and hopes he will want to continue their dates after the festival. Alex also likes Jeff, but is scared to show all of the scaring and thinks Jeff will run just like every other man Alex has ever dated. After a few dates Alex shows Jeff his hands and still Jeff sticks around telling Alex he wants to see him more. Not believing Jeff,“Why, would you want me?” he blurted. “I'm all scarred. You haven't even seen the worst of it. There's more, you know.”I love stories where people see past the outside scarring and into ones soul. Beauty is only skin deep and Jeff proves that to Alex with every turn of a page. *  A free copy of this book was provided by the author in exchange for a honest review. * This story is just the sweetest thing I've read in a really long time. The storyline isn't the best but it left me with a floaty happy smiley feeling. I was soaring on loveliness. Soaring heart is the story of Alex and Jeff. These two beautiful men have been having a rough time and happen to bring out the light in each other. Jeff is moving after losing his parents to a wildfire in California. While helping his sister and her husband out at the Balloon Festival he meets Alex. Alex is a beautiful man and Jeff is instantly attracted to him and while Alex attracted to Jeff he's afraid of being rejected because of his scars. But he's in for a pleasant surprise because his scars don't matter to Jeff. "If the center is rotten, no amount of fancy icing will make it better."Those two men loved each other from the very beginning. And I love that's there was no splitting or big misunderstanding that caused any problems for the bidding relationship. Of course no book is completed without some form of complications and I actually didn't mind how the author ended up closing the book I adored Alex for the way he came forward after just a week to be there for Jeff. No questions, no hesitation just love. The writing was great and the secondary characters were very interesting. I liked Jeff's pregnant sister and Alex's best friend Ruben/Taz (I hope he gets a book) and Alex's nieces and nephews. As m/m romance with men who are great with kids is just awesome. I would totally recommend this if you want a sweet story, guys who adore each other and get their happy ending.

I liked this a lot - 3.5 stars.Soaring Hearts is the first book I’ve read by A. L. Boyd and I liked it a lot. I jumped at the chance to read an advanced copy of this story, in exchange for my review, because I was at the Albuquerque Balloon Fiesta 2 years ago. As far as I can recall from the two days I was there the setting and information about the Fiesta was very accurate. Accurate information is always a plus when a book is set in a location that I’m familiar with. This was a fairly quick read for me – about 2 hours – and the pace of the story was also fairly quick. I found the characters interesting and likeable. Jeff is very romantic and has to convince Alex that he’s worth loving.Jeff recently suffered a great tragedy; his home, parents and dog died in a wild fire. He’s relocating to Albuquerque for a new job and he’s also helping his sister and her husband with their balloon at the Albuquerque Balloon Fiesta.Alex suffered terrible injuries leaving him with physical and emotional scars. He has a really hard time accepting that someone like Jeff could really be interested in him.I think the chemistry between Jeff and Alex was great and the sexy time is hot. A couple of things in the story line kept me from rating this a solid 4 stars but I’d have to give parts of the story away to mention them. They weren’t enough to ruin any of my enjoyment of the story, though so I still recommend this as a good story. I loved how the descriptions of the Fiesta took me back to a happy vacation that I really enjoyed with family and friends.I received a free copy of this book from the author in exchange for my honest review.

3.5 Stars **copy provided to Bayou Book Junkie by the author/publisher in exchange for an honest review*After tragically losing his home and parents, Jeff heads to New Mexico where he has agreed to help his sister and brother-in-law at the the hot air balloon festival, The Fiesta Festival. Jeff has taken a position at a local company and plans to stay on in New Mexico after the festival. On the first day of the festival he meets Alex, who is there to cover the festivities for his family's radio station. Both men are scarred, Jeff emotionally, while Alex is scarred both emotionally and physically. Alex doesn't believe anyone can see past the physical scars and love the person he is on the inside. This was a sweet story. It was just a little too perfect, and instalovey for me, though. Although we get to know the MC's pretty well, I wish the author had spread out the getting to know you portion of the book over a longer and more realistic period of time. I also felt some storylines were left unfinished. Jeff lost his boyfriend to war, and the author mentions it, yet Jeff never shares this with Alex. It just seemed like something he should have shared. The characters are very likable and the story is pretty well-written. These characters have faced some major heartbreak in their lives. While the story has its depressing moments, it's also filled with hope, friendship and love. Recommendable.

*This book was provided for free by the author in exchange for an honest review via the MMRG Don’t Buy My Love Program.*This was a very straightforward, sweet romance. If you are looking for something light and romantic, then this is a good book for you. While the description the blurb gives might make someone who wanted to avoid an angsty romance story leery of picking this book, it is practically angst free. Almost everything about their courtship was meant to inspire warm fuzzies and awe-shucks feelings, from the beautiful and unique backdrop of the Balloon Fest where they meet to their wonderfully caring families and Jeff's sweetness. Given that each MC was dealing with dreadful and heartfelt tragedies in their lives, I was expecting a little more depth from the characters, and the story does not add much in the way of emotional growth, especially with Jeff being practically perfect. Moreover, the way Alex's past comes across in the story is somewhat detached and clinical, like his backstory was basically a prop to make him insecure without being seen as "needy" or "neurotic". It makes sure the reader feels sad for him and doesn't get annoyed by his insecurity and vacillations, but without making the character real in a way that makes a reader invest in and care about them. That being said, it was a solidly written story with likable characters and a pleasantly fluffy romance.

I received a free copy of this book in return of an honest review. This book was not at all what I expected and that influenced my opinion of it. Reading the blurb I expected something much darker or at least with a delicious splash of angst. The book, however, was an almost sugary sweet romance without much depth. That's not a bad thing, if you like that sort of thing, but I usually want a bit more conflict in my reads. Especially because both MC's had a lot of pain and darkness in their past, and although Alex's insecurity about his scars was mentioned almost constantly, I would've liked the book a lot more if the author had delved deeper into, especially Jeff's, past. Jeff was way too healthy for a guy who lost his boyfriend to the war and his parents and house to a fire. I'm also not usually a fan of multiple POV's or of insta-love. These however are very personal things, and things I know other people love.

“People are like cakes. If the center is rotten, no amount of fancy icing will make it better.”This is such a romantic love story that I completely immersed myself in Alex and Jeff’s blossoming relationship. It’s not an easy path for these two men, but Jeff, still freshly bruised from the loss of his parents and everything familiar after a wildfire, finds something beautiful to hold onto in Alex, who is very wary about finding someone who can see past his scars. Alex is so vulnerable when we first meet him that when Jeff unflinchingly offers him a safe place to let his guard down and Alex lets himself have that taste of happiness, I sighed. Out loud. There is something so idyllic about the idea of stretching out next to the person you’re falling in love with and watching the balloons float by that I wanted to be there with them, if only to absorb more of this feel-good vibe. Please note that I received a complimentary copy of this book in exchange for my honest review.

Loved this book! The storyline was amazing and strong. The characters were well developed. Jeff was with his sister and brother-in-law helping withthe hot air balloon in the competition inNew Mexico. After it was overhe would be going into his new job there. After he got them in the air a young man, Alex, who worked at the family news station, came up to Jeff to interview him. Sparks started to fly, but Alex thought Jeff would run after seeing all the scars from his accident.!! But Jeff saw beyond that!!! The two spent a lot of time together!!! This was their story as they got awayfrom the past! Sweet story❤️❤️

I loved this story. Jeff and Alex have both been through so much, what they find together is absolutely beautiful. I loved reading their story. I couldn't put it down, I was so engrossed in their world I kept reading until I finished it. This was the first book I've read from this author and it definitely won't be the last. Really great story. I would highly recommend it. I received a free copy in exchange for an honest review.
