Book 1: Mara Lantern doesn’t believe in metaphysical powers and alternate realities. That's about to change. After a jetliner plunges into the Columbia River near Portland, Oregon, everyone survives. So why do crash investigators have a hangar full of bodies, one for each passenger except Mara? Before the plane goes down, she glimpses a new reality, one with scales and snouts, fangs and gills. She sees a boy running down the aisle carrying a ball of blue light, chased by a girl who could be her clone. By trying to help, she unwittingly unleashes dozens of creatures on an unsuspecting world and sparks a series of events that threatens her life, her family and everything she believes. To save them, she has to embrace a power she cannot comprehend. Book 2: The spirit of a dead man goes viral. He possesses dozens of people, evicting their souls and causing their bodies to decompose even though they are still alive. You see, in the alternate reality from which Juaquin Prado hails, when a person dies, his spirit is interred, not his corpse. So when Prado gets killed in a botched bank robbery, his soul, left unattended spreads like a disease. As if Mara Lantern doesn’t have enough to worry about. Now, in addition to mastering her new metaphysical powers and having a mentor with a propensity for turning into a dragon, she must deal with mindless rotting people roaming the streets of Portland, Oregon. Note: This series is best read in order. Readers should begin with Broken Realms (The Chronicles of Mara Lantern, Book 1). ...

The Chronicles of Mara Lantern Series: Books 1 & 2 Reviews
Excellent adventureAdult issues for YA main characters, Harry Potter level violence, parent issues, abuse. While the main characters may be young adults, I don't see this as a young adult book for reasons stated above. This is an action adventure/save the universe/coming of age type story where YA are forced to kill in self defense, and save the universe. This is in direct contrast to "normal teenage problems " of other characters ( like feeling that your friends are not spending enough time with you) which result in universe- changing consequences. The contrast between Mara and Abby's "problems" show Abby to be somewhat petty and childish in her thinking which leaves her open to attack and disastrous results. All this from a lack of communication between friends, and the failure to do better research of the situation- culture before acting. Engaging story with good world -building and characters. I want to read the rest of the series if it is available with tts for android included.
Total cliffhanger ending. It also seems like there are no limits on her powers, which makes it uninteresting for me.
Good bookBut, read very slowly. Otherwise you will get lost. There are a lot of zigging and zagging going on. It becomes very intense and, in my case, hard to keep up with. But, the story itself is intriguing and will keep you reading.
ExcellentI thought these books (1&2) were very well written. It was one of those books that grabbed me from the start and I didn't want to set it down. The characters came alive in my head as I read on. I will definitely get the rest of this series.
Keep goingI got a little bored during book 1, but the second book really made this worth the read. It's getting interesting and I am looking forward to the next in the series.
Great books. Enjoyed both immensely.
