This is an excellent example of picture book literature from the time perod in which it was initially published. The spare text is populated with strong, warm characters who have a real sense of absolute right and wrong, and whose lives and personalities reflect this ingrained morality. The dilemma that Taro faces as to whether or not he will return the old man's money is both relevant and captivating. "Taro and the Tofu" represents, to me, everything that is right about children's literature that came out prior to 1965. I very much like this simple story and its light feeling of magic.
