A quick little adventure starring baseball-player-turned-private-eye Eli Sharpe. When a sleazy athlete named Duck asks Sharpe to deliver a stuffed pink elephant to his estranged daughter, nothing good comes out of doing this former teammate a favor. Fortunately, drugs, guns, a break-in and a run-in with a nasty hood named Mr. Spoon are all things Eli Sharpe knows how to handle with humor, competence, empathy and without ruffling his favorite seersucker jacket too much.

This should be expanded into a novel.Having devoured Max Everhart's three full-length Eli Sharpe Mysteries, I was hungering for more. Pink Elephant is an appetizer that left me wanting a full-course dinner with the plate piled high. It's all here in this short story: Eli's grit, wit, and tenacity, along with his propensity for getting into and out of trouble, with a little help from his "friends." On this caper an old friend from Sharpe's pro baseball days asks for an innocent-enough favor: deliver a birthday gift to his estranged daughter. Things go rapidly downhill from there, and it's a fun and thrilling ride along the way to the satisfying conclusion. My only complaint is that Everhart didn't turn this into another Eli Sharpe novel. Not yet, anyway.
