Remember Me to God Reviews
The men writers of the 50s, if they were not writing pulp or genre things, spent a lot of time thinly disguising themselves, and writing of their boyhood, and their raging, frustrated hormones as they came of age. I don't know for sure that this book qualifies as that, and I sure hope not. Because the young man who is the protagonist here has a regrettable Harvard career, is a rude little self-hating adolescent, treats his girlfriends and his family badly, and periodically gets his lights punched out.But the author here has some big things to say about the melting pot, assimilation, the point of being a Jew and the point of being an American. His points, because this is a modern novel, are quite lost on the protagonist, who is in sore need of an epiphany. The author leaves us some hope he will get one or two in the army. The book itself poses as a family saga, and the sister of the lughead protagonist gets a plotline, but, frankly, these plots feel very thin. The novel would be better without these and the 150 or so pages spent on them.Nonetheless, this is very much worth a read, because the big things being addressed seem kind of important in an age where the groups that make up the American mosaic are having such a hard time getting along.
I read this back in the eighties without knowing anything about it or the author, and I really enjoyed it. It's about a family with a little dysfunction, that's about all I can remember.
I read this when I was a teenager. Would be interested in re-reading it again and see how my perspectives have changed.
