A perfect evocation of a young rapscallion growing up in Ireland in the fifties and early sixties. It tells a story of a disintegrating family obliquely, through the eyes of the young boy, who doesn't know quite what's going on. Clarke brought some old, bad memories of my own screaming back into my mind--and yet this this is a beautiful, touching book.
