Powers, Spice, And Not So Nice: A Ten Novel Box Set Of Magic, Mayhem, And Awesome Heroines Reviews
Powers, Spice and Not So Nice is an anthology of ten novels. These are short descriptions of my thoughts of each of the ten books in this anthology but for a more in depth review, I have also posted a detailed review to the books listing individually. This book was generously provided in exchange for an honest review by the author. After the Ending (The Ending #1) by Lindsey Fairleigh and Lindsey Pogue5 STARSThis book was thrilling, suspenseful, romantic and just plain awesome. It is about two best friends, Dani and Zoe, who are on opposite coasts of the U.S. After a virus has swept the world and ended life as they knew it, each, along with their friends and friends they meet along the way, try to make it to one another. If you have survived the virus, you are either now gifted with some new talent you did not possess before, or your mind is gone and you are crazy. This book was so good and I have since read the rest of the series and am anxiously awaiting the final book. I highly recommend this series. The Broken Sky by Andrew P. Mayer3 STARSBetsey is at work at the Free-Way Diner when a huge bright light explodes outside in the parking lot temporarily blinding her. When she and her boyfriend go outside to investigate, a frightening chaos is her new reality. I found this one really hard to follow, the entire thing so confusing. I do think I understand what the author was trying to accomplish and towards the end when we finally find out the memory that Betsey has been hiding from, my heart broke for her. But I still had such a hard time trying to figure out what in the world was going on, what was real and what wasn’t. It does end in a cliff hanger so I assume there are or will be sequels to this one. Falling (Girl With Broken Wings #1) by J. Bennett4.5 STARSMaya is thrown into a world of angels, not the good kind, but evil. Angels are genetically enhanced humans that are stronger, faster, and all their senses are heightened. They feed both from the sunlight and by taking the energy or auras from both humans and animals. The need to feed is impossible to suppress. Maya is kidnapped and forced to begin the transition into one of these angels but is rescued by two half-brothers she knew nothing about. I really loved this one. I thought Maya was so strong with all she was forced in to. Her future was changed forever. And I fell in love with her brothers, one a constant source of smiles and one with a tortured soul. I hope to continue on with this series to see what Maya’s future holds. Few Are Angels (Few Are Angels #1) by Inger Iversen3.5 STARSElla has tragically lost her parents and begins to hear a voice in her head and have what she thinks are hallucinations that leave her physically sick. These occurrences land her in a mental hospital for three weeks. After she is released, she goes to live with her parents best friends. It is here she meets Kale who explains that she is an Arc, that her visions are of her own past lives. And that an evil dark prince is after her to possess her and her abilities. This was a very different story of an evil immortal dark prince, and half vampires called Chory. Kale is a Chory. I had a little trouble connecting with Ella. I also felt the author included a little too much detail about things that didn’t seem all that important to the story so my mind would wander. All in all, though, it was very interesting with an intense epilogue. Kill It With Magic (The Lillim Callina Chronicles #1) by J.A. Cipriano3 STARSLillim Callina uses magic to fight demons, vampires and all other such creatures that threaten the world. When Lillim receives a message that her ex-boyfriend, Joshua, needs her help, it sets her off on a crazy sequence of adventures where everything that could go wrong, goes wrong. In searching for Joshua, she is sent to retrieve a jeweled box from the werewolves, which in turn, ends up pitting her against the vampires because she has to retrieve what they stole from within the box. Add in a few demons, a dragon, and a crazy mentor and you have non-stop chaos. The book starts right out with crazy action and doesn’t stop until the end. There were a lot of characters in this book and I had a bit of trouble keeping them all straight. And poor Lillim, she was beaten and battered every step of the way. With everything that was going on, I never really got a chance to emotionally connect with Lillim until about three-quarters of the way through when Joshua finally finds her. I have to give her credit, though. With everything that happens to her, Lillim never gave up. She just kept getting back up and jumping back in.Ringmaster (Carnival Series #1) by Trudi Jaye 4 STARSThis is a very unique and also intense story of a magical carnival, The Jolly Carnival. Rilla Jolly’s father has been killed in a tragic accident and Rilla was not fully prepared to take over as Ringmaster. Before her father was killed, he had been investigating a series of sabotages that have been weakening the magic of the Carnival. At her father’s wake, a man that hasn’t been a part of the Carnival for 35 years returns to challenge her for the position of the Ringmaster. He is accompanied by his sexy son, Jack. This book was really enjoyable as Jack and Rilla try to find who is responsible for all the acts of sabotage. Also, the more time they spend together, a bond is forming between Jack and Rilla. The Carnival chooses a recipient at each of their stops of a ‘gift.’ It chooses one person that has a need that the Carnival can fulfill. But this gift will be the most difficult they have ever had to fulfill. So Rilla has more on her shoulders than she can handle. Is she the right choice as Ringmaster? Note: This is the first book in this anthology that does have a mild sex scene so this particular story might not be suitable for younger readers. I would classify it as New Adult.Shadow’s Awakening (Shadow Warder #1) by Molle McGregor5 STARSI love this book. I broke from this anthology and read the prequel to this one first. Hannah is a graduate student whose life was turned upside down. She thought she was going crazy but instead, unknown to her, her Shadow powers are slowly coming to the surface. She has been held captive for six months by her step father who is taken over by Vorati, evil demons that use humans as host bodies and feed off of the pain and grief filled emotions of humans. Conner is a Warden whose life work is killing Vorati. He becomes Hannah’s savior when he rescues her from the Vorati nest. They hide out in a remote mountain cabin where their time together turns from savior to passion as they give in to the chemistry they are both experiencing. But again, they are attacked so Conner turns Hannah over to those he thought would keep her safe and teach her about who she is. But again, things aren’t what they seem and Hannah is imprisoned and used to experiment on to learn more about what she is. Can Conner save her again? I totally understand why this book is part of this anthology. Hannah fights every step of the way to save herself. I love this series and plan to continue on with the next book in the series. Note: this book does contain adult content and is not suitable for readers under the age of 18.Shifty Magic (Shifty Magic #1) by Judy Teel4 STARS I really enjoyed this book. Addison Kittner is a tough, quick minded private investigator/bounty hunter who gets drawn into helping to solve a string of murders alongside a swoony werewolf/FBI agent she might have a history with. Cooper Daine requests that Addie work with him on this case but can they work together as professional partners or will the night they shared together get in the way? Maybe Cooper wants it to! This was a fast paced book that was a great start in to what looks like a great series. I enjoyed getting to know Addie and loved watching her struggle with her feelings towards Cooper. This is a world with vampires, werewolves, magic practioners, and who knows what else. Addie has a knack for getting herself in to trouble and it’s all Cooper can do to keep her safe. I look forward to seeing what is in store for Addie next in the following books. The Spookshow by Tim McGregor4 STARSBillie was an ordinary woman until an accident that changed her forever. Now she can see dead people. She is coerced into going to a house that is slated to be torn down dubbed The Murder House with two of her friends. This visit uncovers a secret and unleashes a series of events that will change the women’s lives. Billie is forced to call the police and one particular detective, Ray Mockler, that she was trying to avoid. Ray is the one that caused the accident that changed her life in the first place. I did enjoy this book. It was spooky and fast paced and a quick read. I found myself wanting to know more of the accident and Ray’s involvement but perhaps the author covers this in later books in the series. Echo Prophecy (Echo Trilogy #1) by Lindsey Fairleigh4.5 STARSAlexandra is an archaeology doctoral student who has just been offered the chance of a lifetime participating in a prestigious dig in Egypt with the handsome Marcus. But at the same time, Lex starts experiencing strange and very real dreams, both of things that haven’t happened yet and things of a past she knew nothing about. Lex is soon to discover that she is not who or what she thought she was. That she is part of a prophecy and that the safety of humanity just might be resting on her shoulders. At the same time, as she and Marcus spend time together, sparks fly but could their chemistry also be part of the prophecy? This was a really good start into this series. It is a true test of good vs evil. I loved watching the relationship develop between Marcus and Lex and watching Lex develop in to who she was meant to be. Can’t wait to see where this goes. This book does contain some adult content.
I've read only Shadow's Awakening by Molle McGregor. It was close to perfection and refreshingly unique. 4 stars out of 5See my review here.
