Their first meeting was...kismet, at least for Alex. The heart of the storyAlex doesn't have the capacity for any distractions as he focuses on the baseball batting prize. But he's drawn to Jackie like a moth to flame. She's pretty prickly and has vowed off relationships after a very bad one years ago and both have extremely challenging careers that require intense concentration. It's a dance they're losing when Alex drifts into a volunteer role at the center...during the season! The strength of the taleThis is NOT your typical baseball story. I loved what I learned about a player's mindset about the game. I've been a baseball fan for a long time and had no clue about the mental rigor and preparation in parallel with the physical skills for a player to be successful. It was fascinating and didn't overwhelm the story. I also got an education about marine mammal issues and those committed to their sustenance and survival. Alex and Jackie are extremely well developed characters, so much so that I felt I knew them intimately by the end of the book. He's a dreamboat, really. Jackie was tougher to warm up to but I got there. Theirs is an unconventional romance that fit who they were individually and as a developing couple, sensual and intense. The bottom lineThe writer delivers so much more than a standard romance. Issues related to the vineyard, marine mammal rescue and baseball were well researched and presented. Nora Roberts is the only other romance writer I've read that gives you this type of education along with a love story. There was also a pretty exciting climax and not just related to sports. I loved the story, the writing and the characters. Nice surprise. (I received an ARC from the author in exchange for an honest review)

Alex Tavonesi isn’t looking for love. He is focused on his game. A successful Baseball player and manager of his Father’s prestigious Vineyard he isn’t ready for the distraction of trying to find ‘The One’.Veterinarian Jackie Brandon is trying to escape her affluent upbringing in England, and the lover who jilted her at the altar.Devoting all of her time to helping the marine life and mammals on the Northern California coast.During a stormy night while rescuing a beached whale she and Alex meet.He is drawn to her and while watching her work tirelessly in trying to find who or what is poisoning all these beautiful creatures he soon realises she could be the missing part of him.In a sinister turn of events, could the culprits of the poisonings destroy the couple before they’ve begun? With a multitude of romance of novels flooding the market at the moment I’m happy to give something a little different a chance.I am truly grateful for having been given the opportunity to read this wonderful story, at first glance you’d think it would be a run of the mill Jock romance with a pretty girl but the depth and complications in this story completely drew me in and had me hooked.Jackie is a complex character and sometimes incredibly frustrating to read, she is stubborn, strong and also scared of her own feelings and with that comes a frustrating dialogue with the character of Alex but fundamentally it works because they both need to regain an element of trust in each other. With the surrounding characters I found they fit well into this story, they complement the darker sides to this story and add an element of comedy.I loved reading the romantic/sex scenes. They were written perfectly with the right amount of descriptive. With some British terminology thrown in I couldn’t help but giggle, having read many American romances it was refreshing to feel at home with this. What else can I say apart from that this book will have your heart in your mouth, you will shout, sigh and smile at the characters and love every minute.ARC Supplied For Review.

My Rating: Did not finish @ 25%Good God. I've never been so bored while reading a book. I expected this one to be good with the baseball element. I can't resist a ball player, and while Alex seemed to be a great guy with potential, the heroine here got on my nerves. A stuck up British bitch with a chip on her shoulder is not my cup of tea. I'll take a good old fashioned American bar slut with daddy issues any day. Jackie came across as a judgmental twat with an unyieldingly rigid personality I didn't feel like would ever get better. Plus the majority of the first quarter of the book was nothing but tissue samples, injured sea lions, and Jackie's "I hate ballplayers" schtick. It got old really quick. There's too many nonsensical details about the animals and her job and not enough of anything thus far. I'm too bored with it to continue and find anything of depth so I'm moving on.

Alex Tavonesi is a famous baseball player and heir to a vineyard in northern California. When he bumps into Jackie Brandon snooping around his vineyard he’s instantly attracted to her. Jackie works as a veterinarian at the California Marine Mammal Center. She must get to the bottom of why seals and sea lions are mysteriously dying. She discovers a poisons substance being dumped into the water close by the vineyards. Alex volunteers at the marine center to get closer to Jackie but the last thing she’s looking for is a relationship, especially with a jock. As their attraction grows, Alex is having a hard time staying focused on his big hitting season and Jackie is distracted from uncovering the truth. The best way to describe this gripping romance story is “hot.” Alex is surprisingly a level headed sweetheart for being so rich and famous. Jackie is career minded and I enjoyed learning more about saving marine animals. My favorite reads are spin-off series by Nora Roberts and I’m happy to find another author I love reading as much. A great love story that will wrap you up in the steamy hot attraction between Alex and Jackie but the danger threatening their lives will keep you on edge.I’m looking forward to reading all of the In the Heart of the Game Series.

This is a really lovely hot story. It's based on two characters Alex and Jackie. Alex is a baseball player and he manages his fathers vineyard. He's hot and sexy and I just loved reading about him. Jackie is a vet who works in a marine centre. She's trying to find out why the sea lions & seals are dying mysteriously. Alex can't resist volunteering in the centre to be close to Jackie. The research the author did for this book on the two main subjects- baseball and marine biology is fantastic. I certainly love reading a book that broadens my mind with subjects I know nothing about. When I started reading this I wasn't interested in either subjects but once I got into the book my views changed. Great writing with a brilliant storyline. Received arc in return for an honest review.

This was fun --- well-rounded characters, a scientific-minded heroine, and a romance that doesn't depend on endless sex scenes to fill pages. The sports element didn't even annoy me, which is saying a lot.

An enjoyable and easy read, this is the first in a series by this author. Alex is the first baseman for the San Francisco Giants who feels like there is something missing from his life, he just doesn't know what. Even though his goal is to get the Triple Crown, he still knows there is something more that he needs. It's not until he runs into Dr. Jackie Brandon that he is beginning to realize what it is. Jackie is a vet for marine sanctuary who is trying to figure out what is killing the lcoal marine life, specifically the seals. While out getting soil and water samples, she unexpectantly runs into Alex. Even though she finds him handsome and mysterious, she knows she doesn't have time for any type of personal relationship. After Alex shows up at the marine sanctuary to volunteer, Jackie tries her best to fight her attraction to him by coming up with all kinds of reasons. Alex feels the attraction with Jackie but tries to fight it, thinking he doesn't have the time to pursue a relationship between playing baseball and running the family vineyard. When Alex decides to pursue Jackie, he tries his best to do everything he can to get her to give them a chance. Jackie keeps fighting it but when Gage keeps pestering her to give him a chance, she thinks about everything he has done and decides to go for it. Meanwhile, someone is trying to sabotage her findings with the water samples to keep something hidden. After her life is put in danger, Alex comes to the rescue and tries to convince her that he is all in and wants the same from her. Jackie is afraid that her past life in England will come between them if he ever finds out the truth. The love scenes are not steamy as other books but it leaves more to the reader's imagination. I was satisfied with the ending of the book and look forward to reading others in this series.

Cute and fun. Jackie Brandon is an English aristocrat who is also a marine mammal vet investigating why seals and sea lions are becoming sick and dying. She meets Alex Tavonesi when she's collecting samples of water near his winery. There is instant chemistry between them, but Jackie is focused on her career and her Marine Mammal Center and has no room in her life for a man.In addition to owning a winery (that he inherited when his father died), Alex is first baseman for the San Francisco Giants and is looking to clinch the "Triple Crown" of batting this year. He has no room in his life for women or romance or anything that might distract him from winning the Triple Crown.Alex, against his better judgment, volunteers at the Marine Mammal Center just to be near Jackie. Jackie resists his attention at first, but both find themselves falling in love. There is some intrigue in the story, as someone breaks into the Center and steals Jackie's water samples. The supporting characters add depth: Gage, Jackie's 2nd-in-command; Sabrina, Alex's sister; Scotty, Alex's teammate. This is the first in a series and I know I'll be reading others.

Baseball, intrigue, romanceI enjoy watching baseball so to find a romance book with baseball the main part of the book, I thought why not. Loved it. Alex is an athlete who has it all, but love. Jackie is a veterinary for marine mammals. She was burned by love before so doesn't want anything to do with it. I enjoyed reading what attracted them to each other- strength, brains, skill, physique. I will definitely read more by Pamela Aares as buying the next book after finishing this review. I would definitely recommend this book to read. Hope you all enjoy it as much as I did.

Working your way to trustAlex is a pro baseball player and owner of the family vineyards. Jackie is a veterinarian with a specific love for ocean life, particularly seals & sea lions. This story has some great twists and turns. A ball player with a heart of gold and a vet who has a sad history with pro ball players. This was a well written story with intrigue, light suspense, trust issues and a whole lotta love!! I enjoyed this book and I can't wait to get my hands on the rest of the series!!

Adventure and RomanceSuch an exciting book! The ups and downs of baseball great Alex and the dedication of marine vet Jackie to all things ocean make for a fun tale on their way to falling in love. Add in the Russian drug Lord's and the stunning winery owned by Alex and you have a great plot, interesting characters and a wonderful love story! Perfect hit!

This review is of “Love Bats Last” book 1 of 8 in the “Tavonesi” series by Pamela Aares. The Story: In the very first chapter we meet the hero, Alex Tavonesi, baseball star for the Giants, and manager of his family’s winery, Trovare. He rescues Jackie Brandon, the heroine, when her pontoon gets stuck. Jackie, originally from England, is a marine biologist, investigating the poisoning of local sea life. Jackie and Alex share their love of marine biology; he actually majored in it in college before turning his attention to his other love, baseball. Most of the rest of the book is learning about Jackie and Alex. Jackie was born in England, has a brother, Cory, who is a surfer, and they both have titles; they are essentially English royalty. Jackie was previously engaged to a soccer player, who ditched her on their wedding day to get back together with a lingerie model. Alex has many siblings, one of whom, a sister named Grace, died of drowning when she was 8. Another sister, Sabrina, keeps trying to hook Alex up with her friends; while Alex and the women have short-term relationships, nothing major comes of those interactions. As the book goes on, Jackie and Alex discover that they are attracted to each other, while trying to keep their minds on their professional goals; for Jackie, it’s saving marine life; for Alex, it’s baseball and his pursuit of the Triple Crown. (Batting Average, Home Runs, Runs Batted In.) Jackie is also trying to figure out her relationship with a scientist, Bradley Hanson; they’ve dated occasionally, but she doesn’t feel for him what she feels for Alex. As Jackie wonders about who is poisoning the sea life, she becomes suspicious of one of her biggest donors, Mark Volkov.Jackie and Alex later make love, but their afterglow is ruined when she asks him about whether or not he knows anything about the poisoned sea life. When Alex doesn’t immediately deny knowledge-and belittles Jackie’s theory about what happened-she gets angry and leaves him. She is later kidnapped by Volkov’s toughs. Alex, however, rescues her. The book ends with Alex winning the Triple Crown, Volkov disappearing-he’ll likely show up in another book-and of course, Jackie and Alex have their Happily Ever After. This is not a bad book, it’s just not a great one. The characters aren’t well developed-nor terribly interesting-and there simply isn’t a lot of heat between Jackie and Alex; it’s a slow-burn romance. Not that there’s anything wrong with that, but the book didn’t really grab my attention and hold it, even though I finished it. There are also typos and Ms. Aares still needs to beef up her baseball knowledge. If I were judging on a 1-10 scale-1 being horrible and 10 being super-I would give “Love Bats Last” a 6. Sex: Three love scenes; the first tries to be hot but doesn’t quite get there; the second and third are pretty mild.Violence: Some of the sea life come in with injuries caused by humans. Most of the violence occurs during Jackie’s kidnapping; she’s assaulted and nearly raped by the man, Daron Bennett. When Alex comes to rescue her he has a fight with Bennett, which results in Bennett’s death; he falls from a cliff trying to throw Jackie over. Bottom Line: There was potential here for a really good book, but I’m not sure Ms. Aares made it there.

Anyways, I got a tweet from Pamela Aares about the release of Love Bats Last. The cover is Bella Andre-esk so I was intrigued. Personally I am not a baseball fan (or much of a sports fan besides UFC tbh) but the Marine Animal Veterinarian intrigued me because my current job is as a receptionist at an animal clinic. And the book was less than $5 on kobo so I decided to try it, and Holy Unicorns it was amazing!Quick summary:Alex Tavonesi is an All-Star baseball player and winery owner who meets Marine Animal Veterinarian Jackie Brandon on the side of a river. He is instantly intrigued by her and ends up volunteering at the marine animal rescue centre that Jackie spends her life running. Sparks fly but it's not smooth sailing, especially because something in the water is hurting the marine life. To start off, there was serious science and research behind this book! The author clearly has a lot of knowledge about both baseball and marine biology, there was a lot of scientific detail and a very intimate look at baseball. I felt like I actually learned a lot during this book, and I have a whole new appreciation for the sport of baseball, the strength and precision it requires. I never realized that batters have a fraction of a second to figure out where the ball is going and try to hit it. That's some seriously tough stuff! So the research and detail of this book was mind blowing. The fact that the author used all of the correct terminology to do with the lab and the rescue centre was extremely impressive.I enjoyed that there was an edge of mystery to the whole novel, even though the story was primarily about the love story between Alex and Jackie. During the entire book I just kept wanting to know what was happening to the poor animals! I was super impressed that Pamela Aares was able to perfectly, and I do mean perfectly, combine a compelling love story and a thrilling mystery. It was absolutely brilliant because I wasn't just reading to find out the happy ending, I was also reading to find out who dun it.The steam factor was good for sure, not as mind blowing as some books I have read but it definitely satisfied me. Overall it was just a really amazing novel! I love the detail, I loved the precision, I loved Alex and Jackie, especially because Alex didn't back down. The story kept me on my toes and I din't want to put it down, and the writing was just really well done. I definitely recommend this to anyone, and I am so happy that Pamela Aares tweeted me or else I probably wouldn't have known about this incredible book. So please go check it out! I promise you will love it. I cannot wait for Thrown by Love (out March 4th!) which is Scotty's story. I really hope she also does stories for Alex's sister and Jackie's brother!5 Shiny Stars!Thank you so much for reading this review! I really hope you liked it, please tell me your thoughts!Peace, Love and Baseball Players!- Lady Literary <3

PUBLISHED: November 25th 2013PUBLISHER: SeaStar PressPAGES: 317 ApproxFORMAT: Kindle Just yes. This story was well written, had loveable and witty characters, a well written and engaging plot, it was nearly a five star read. So very very close.I loved reading this book, I loved everything about it. Well, nearly everything anyway. I love a romance book that not only has a believable love story you can really root for, but that also and almost more importantly, has a good, actual storyline in order to help things to progress in a natural fashion. There is nothing worse than a book that goes:Boy meets Girl…Girl falls in love with boy…They happen to bump into each other one evening…Boom! They are in bed together! If that's the kind of thing that you like, that's fine. We don't judge here, I am an equal opportunity reader, each to their own. But I personally cannot stand it!! It is boring to read for one and two, it is just so darned unrealistic. Jackie and Alex's relationship grew in a pretty natural way, I love a relationship that starts off with barbs and banter, and then you slowly watch them warm to each other and … yup. I'm a sucker for it. And a huge sucker for the sarcastic witty dialogue too. It was serious where it needed to be and sensitive where it needed to be, but between those moments, and sometimes during them, there was some fabulous humour, serving to make this book pretty well rounded.I was surprised that the mystery element of this book took such a prominent position. Don;t get me wrong, that is most definitely a compliment. I love a good mystery, but I wasn't expecting it. I was expecting a romantic love story, first and mystery second. To my great surprise and joy, the two almost had a fifty fifty split, with a little bit going to the baseball storyline on the side. As a British reader, the fine points of the baseball story kind of went right over my head. I was glad it wasn't leant on too heavily or I may have quickly lost interest in this book as it is something I would not have been able to connect with. The only thing I didn't like about this book, is that I felt the ending was maybe a little drawn out. I think the book came to it's natural finishing point a chapter or two before the epilogue. It's like the author finished the book, but couldn't bare to be done with her characters yet, so wrote a scene or two more, just to help get them out of her system. I feel the end of the jacuzzi scene would have been a good stopping pint for the book, but again, that is only my opinion, and it is only a liner criticism any way.

I was pleasantly surprised at how enjoyable this book was. The writer has good command of the language and of novel structure. Love Bats Last is a simple love story, but and interesting and quick read. (Just as a reminder to myself: the author relies too heavily on sex -- making it too large a part of the story.)

What a wonderful start to new series. If you love All-Star athlete heroes and smart, strong-willed heroines, you won't go wrong with the “Heart of the Game” series. Some parts of Love Bats Last read like a love story between world-renowned vet Jackie and her passion. She's tenacious when it comes to saving marine mammals and goes the far distance (or shall I say depth) for her cause, sometimes even at the risk of her own safety. Alex is similarly focused on his goals: maintaining his vintner father's legacy, being at the top of his game, and winning the elusive batting Triple Crown that's finally within reach. He can't afford to be distracted, much less by a woman. While the book gives exceptionally vivid details regarding the ins and outs of the rescue center Jackie manages, the romantic build-up between our two leads leaves a little to be desired. They are shown to be attracted to each other, but the time they spend together doesn't reach sizzle level until the second half of the novel. The romance aspect is very, very slow to develop. In the end, it feels as though the occasional infodump happens at the expense of Alex and Jackie's relationship. But I loved their climax. In both sense of that word. :3 I thought their first time was really steamy. My reaction to the mystery of the dying seals is a little less enthusiastic. I thought the suspenseful climax and some parts leading to it a tad sloppy after all that great foundation. I like unexpected things as long as the clues given are relevant, but this one is almost out of left field. We could've been not introduced to the bad guys or not known of Jackie's wariness in meeting them, and it would've been just as convincing (which is…not a lot, but enough).Still, Love Bats Last is an intriguing multi-layered read. It's evident Ms. Aares either has done her research well or is a passionate rescue volunteer herself. I find the complex plot both its weakness and its strength—some parts just didn't work for me, most parts did—but as a whole, the story works, and works well. There are a few lovable side characters, and two of them are getting their own HEA later in the series. This is not just another sports romance and is definitely worth checking out.I will be reading more from this author.

Nice little romance. This is the first book I've read from Pamela Aares.I liked the plot, and thought it was nicely written. The fact that the characters took longer than a few days to "fall in love" was refreshing. Even though the book spanned 5 months, the author was able to convey the passage of time without giving us boring daily run downs. The only issue that I had with the story was that Jackie really was an unpleasant person. I wouldn't want to spend any time with her at all, least of all volunteering to work for her. I would write a check for the nonprofit and move on. So, I found it hard to understand why Alex was so willing to put himself out there for her. I think Jackie's general character could have been written to be likable, but relationship challenged and that would have provided enough conflict between the two leads.I would read another book from the author.

This story centers on Jackie “Jack” Brandon and Alex Tavanesi. Jackie is a gun-ho marine biologist vet, beyond serious in what she does. Which is a cover for her past. As for Alex, he is a San Francisco Giant’s Baseball player, who inherited the roll of owner and operator of Trovare Vineyards when his father passed two years ago. Up until then he had only been torn between his love for baseball, the marine biology (ocean), and the good life. One day he happens upon a chance meeting while taking a lunch break down by the river, Jackie trying to unstick her boat from the mud. You see she had gotten out to take water and soil samples up and down the river that that runs into the bay to the ocean for its killing the seals. That day for both of them changed their lives. You see it reminded Alex of a time before college and really even baseball when he wanted to sail the ocean. So, he use to go down to the water all the time. All he could think of was getting to the rescue center where Jackie worked to help out. Jackie due to her past was leery of Alex and she couldn’t understand her sudden interest in him and this connection that made her think of him and his strength she saw when he helped her get her boat out of the mud. Especially when she avoided men all together but especially men like him. Strong, handsome, rich, and sports stars. They were drawn to each other like moths to a flame. The more they both tried to stop thinking of one another, being around one another, or mentioning each other they just couldn’t, which was totally unlike either of them. To the point where those close to them started to notice. Then, it started mess with both of their jobs but yet each of their jobs started to intertwine and this was uncomfortable for Jackie especially since she was investigating all the vineyards. I totally enjoyed this book there was love, conflict, intrigue, fear, suspense, and a marine education at the same time. Most of all was the fun bantering spirit of all the characters but especially Jackie and Alex. I just loved Gage and how his character never held back. The sports angle made it fun too. I would give it 4 1/2 if I could :)

I loved this story!Love Bats Last is not your usual sport / jock romance, it is more complex and involved then what you usually get as a reader and I couldn't have enjoyed it more.Alex is a professional Baseball player for the San Francisco Giants and he is also running his family vineyard since his father died. He is a fantastic, down to earth, strong and very loveable character who is under a great deal of pressure to succeed with not only the vineyard but his baseball career and the expectations of him winning the coveted batting title.Jackie is a very frustrating character who you will find hard to love. She is highly intelligent, independent, strong willed, stubborn and some what arrogant. There are also parts of her life that she keeps secret from everyone because of the importance of them. When the two meet by chance because Jackie is investigating the mysterious deaths and sickness of the local seals and sea lions, there is an instant spark between the two which they both want to deny, Alex because he isn't looking to fall for anyone and Jackie because she has no idea what she is feeling and is too focused on her career.Alex finds himself volunteering at the centre where Jackie works in order to spend more time with her but also finds he loves it because it was once a passion of his. Their relationship develops VERY slowly which at times can be frustrating but still enthralling some how. There's danger lurking as Jackie starts to uncover leads to what is effecting the seals and many events take place that become dangerous. When it comes down to it, will Alex step up to the plate and bat for the title or will he risk it all for his love for Jackie?I loved the realistic and accurate aspects with everything related to baseball and marine care /study. This was a well researched book that kept you intrigued as to what was going to happen. It was very well written and when the ending came... wow, I did not expect things to happen the way they did or Jackie's secret. The story also included some fantastic secondary characters who fit perfectly into the mix and I hope to see more of in the future.I honestly can't wait to get my hands on the next book in the series and highly recommend this great read.

Rating: 4.5What draws me most to this book are the two main characters who are passionate in what they do best: Alex Tavonesi doesn’t only do good on the baseball field, but he also tries his best in running his family’s vineyard. He wasn’t well-blessed in his love life, considering he hasn’t met the woman who can sweep him off his feet. They were either clawing after him because of money or fame. Then here’s Jackie Brandon, the smart, adrenaline junkie, hard worker veterinarian whose, ahem, aristocratic past and bad experience with another ball player made her put off love for a while. She spends her time saving marine mammals on the northern California coast where a couple of seals and sea lions are washing up dead.It took one storm, and one stranded whale for Alex and Jackie to be brought in together. And for the first time in his life, Alex saw a woman way different from what he is accustomed to. This woman isn’t fake, nor wanting his attention, she wouldn’t even give him the time of the day – but her passion, her courage, and her intensity with her work had made a mark on him. He wanted her, but he needed to go beyond her walls first. So it needed some volunteering saving the marine mammals to catch her attention, he had done this while playing on the field, and managing the vineyards – talk about EFFORT!Don’t you just love him? To put in this great effort despite his busy schedule, and the pressure he is receiving left and right is more than just an ordinary grand gesture. BUT, beneath this budding romance lies mysterious deaths of several marine mammals, and Jackie is about to uncover the culprit. However, the people involve might want to keep her silence. Can Alex save her in time? This is my first Pamela Aares book, and I wasn’t disappointed. This was a great way to start off the series: amazing plot + strong characters + interesting twist + humor + romance + mystery = un-put-down-able book!✪Complimentary Copy was given in exchange for an honest review.✪

eARC for Honest Review from Author and Artmedia GroupI don't know why but one of guilty pleasures are sports romances. Here, we have a baseball legend/winery owner who is trying to find his way into the heart of the dedicated yet jaded Veterinarian.Jackie Brandon once gave her heart away but it got stomped on by a footballer back home. To protect what is left of her heart she throws everything into to saving the animals at any cost. What she doesn't have time for is rich spoiled baseball players.Alex meets Jackie randomly but once he meets her he's intrigued. But the only way to win her heart is through the animals. As Jackie and Alex muddle their way, they uncover a scandal that is hurting the animals which puts them at jeopardy.I liked it! At times it felt drawn out. Other times I wanted to slap Jackie so she could get her head out of her ass with her stubborn ways. But the good times were Alex slowly making his way past Jackie's guard. In the end it's a sweet suspenseful love story. For more reviews, visit Live Read and BreatheLike us on Facebook Live Read and Breathe FacebookFollow along with Twitter Live Read and Breathe Twitter
