Bethorm: The Plane of Tekumel RPG Reviews
One way to describe RPGs is where they fit on the fluffy to crunchy scale. Fluffy RPGs are light on mechanics and rules. Crunchy RPGs are heavy on mechanics and focus on precise calculations and determinations.Reading the Bethorm rulebook is like swimming the 100 meter freestyle through rice krispies. For the unfamiliar, Tekumel is a roleplaying world that started in "Empire of the Petal Throne" around the same time as AD&D and therefore predates most universes. While many fantasy settings are based on Tolkien-esque, western mythology, Tekumel is based on a mixture of South Asian, Mesoamerican, and other mythologies in a pleasantly bizarre world. There's a ton of material out there from decades of roleplaying and many diehard fans, and all of that is slowly coming out with digital distribution.Bethorm is a new rule system in the world of Tekumel. I genuinely appreciate Dee's effort to revive the world, and he does a good job of synthesizing a tremendous amount of source material into some digestible bits. However, the rest of it is filled with tables and references and arcane rules that I don't think I will ever play. Given that I can't seem to find any play sessions on youtube, the Bethorm forums have been quiet for over a year, and I don't see any convention notices, I think the Bethorm system is dead. The saving grace of this volume is that the PDF version may be very useful to GMs who want to run other systems in Tekumel. This book probably would have been best as a web app/wiki of some sort where you could easily navigate the references in the text and spawn random NPCs and treasure with a click of a button. Short of that, it's new content in Tekumel, so if your into the world, it has some value there.
