Then You Think Again Reviews
That was kinda fun. What started out as a life or death situation turned into quite a pretty HEA.Derek was just so matter of fact about all of it and it made me laugh.
3 StarsThis story was all over the shop! I could get stuck into various aspects of the writing or the numerous plot points that just weren’t coherent, but regardless of all my mini issues, I still enjoyed this story as a whole. It’s a Sterek romance told in reverse – claim, cohabit, fall in love (in that order). At the beginning of the story, Stiles and Derek find themselves in a situation that requires Derek to “claim” Stiles as his mate or they will both face certain death (although, the “certainty of death” is more an expression of opinion, rather than anything we as readers actually expect – the threat was blah and I wanted more detail). And don’t get all excited about said “claiming”; it’s literally a boring ritual where Derek marks Stiles with his blood. BOO!!!So anyway, Derek claims Stiles, a bond ensues, and then Derek decides it’s imperative to be closer to his mate and promptly moves in with Stiles. The Sheriff is surprisingly chill about all this. I didn’t know whether to be baffled by his reaction or just accept him as his usual awesome self. I went with the awesome.By this point, it’s been quite the whirlwind non-romance, but I was having a ton of fun along the way, particularly with Stiles’ rambling POV (which was like an 11 on a scale of 1 to 10).The second half of this story simply potters along, providing sweet scenes of platonic domesticity and many a quirky interaction between Stiles and Derek’s pack (Erica was pretty cool in this story, however briefly). There’s the inevitable realisation (by Stiles) that there are some more feelings than were originally expected and he proceeds to woo Derek into an actual relationship. He succeeds (obviously), but then the worst thing imaginable happens... FADE TO FUCKING BLACK! Ugh, the worst! This is like the 10th non sexy times Sterek I’ve read in passing weeks and I’ve had it up to HERE! *gestures really fucking high* (This is an utter exaggeration; it’s more like, out of the last 10 Sterek’s I’ve read, 3 of them lacked sexy fun times and that’s about my limit!) Depending on the story – or let’s be honest, my mood – this usually wouldn’t bother me so greatly, but after multiple stories teasing me out of some much needed man-on-man goodness, I could just about cry in frustration. So, my question is: Where are all the good sexy Sterek’s? Have I read them all?! Heaven forbid!(REC ME, people!!)Anyhoo, the story was jolly good fun and I’m just going to pretend they had a raunchy hot time at the end there!
An okay fic but not that memorable. The bonding/mating idea was an interesting version, the packs reaction to Stiles was kinda cute.Sometimes the reactions didn't match the event - specifically the Sheriff's reaction to Stiles' return (view spoiler)[- still don't know what it was with the Squirrels or why these hunters/hunter were so scary.- how come none of the pack (Scott?) was looking for them?- didn't the police trace vehicles? how come they didn't suspect Stiles was with Derek?- a major tv aired man-hunt Stiles returns and simply goes to bed, his father then returns from searching and instead of checking on him makes food and shouts 'Scott's here'? (hide spoiler)]After the main story it felt a bit diconnected. At the very end it took me awhile to remember who the girl was.
3.5 stars This started as a solid four star for me, but about a third of the way through lost a few points by throwing in some out of left field drama which allowed for some tension to be easily glazed over. Despite this it is a fun easy, Sterek read with a touch of emotional depth, enough plot to keep your mind occupied and some great lines with dry humor. And a first for me - I really liked Erica in this, she has a background role still, but normally I am not fan of her presence in these - or I guess her character in general I find her bland and irritating to me (a little too classically suited to an MTV show). She wasn't too "dead behind the eyes" in this one. “Really, they'd spent the first 10 minutes or so staring at each other blankly, Erica asking, "Is Derek dead yet?" and Stiles saying, "Nope," at regular intervals. At some point Stiles had broken down and said, "Hey, we've got that Econ test this week, help me make flashcards?" and Erica had said, "Oh my God I forgot about that. Being a werewolf is like, the world's most attention-sucking extra-curricular.”
This was sort of sweet, and rambling - just like Stiles with his constipated werewolf. And the ending made me smile.
Not my favorite. It was a bit long, and the structure was awkward at times. The slow burn probably wouldn't have been as frustrating if they hadn't been mated so early in the story. Which leads to my real complaint: no sex. Which is a real downer for me with my Sterek. I like my Sterek sexy times. I do not like to be denied!
3.75 starsThis was a fun read, although I have to admit, thinking back on it, not all of it is hugely memorable. Review to follow when I'm on the computer.
Very cute and fun, but I got a little bit lost in the middle.
