My chore after dinner is to feed my kelpie. A kelpie, if you don't know, is a carnivorous faerie horse. A kelpie, if you don't know, is a carnivorous faerie horse. Until I accidentally gave him a piece of my soul, this particular kelpie had killed two kids near the hundreds-of-years-old castle my family and I live in. Heather MacArthur had a hard enough time dealing with the arrival of a kelpie into her life, but that was only the beginning. Summoned as liaison between humans and faerie, Heather is informed by the fey nobles that another danger has arrived in the area and is claiming rights to the MacArthur lands: a particularly mad daoine sith named Calbraith, that even the kelpie finds cruel and unusual. As luck would have it, twenty students have also just arrived at the MacArthur family castle for her mother's riding camp. It will take Heather, her whole family, the royal family, and a few friends she didn't realize she had, to keep Calbraith from enslaving--or killing--all of them."...

The Kelpie is still there. But that's OK. Heather and Joe's families now all know that not only does the Kelpie exist, it is trying to be on its best behavior. Oh, and the "Good Neighbors" really are for real and not really very friendly. In fact, some of them hate Heather, her family, and, actually, all of humanity. One of the Fey goes so far as to take it on himself to destroy everything connected to Heather, and take over our world while he is at it. So once again it is up to Heather, aided by the Kelpie (Yes, the Kelpie helps), to save the world. Heather's family is there to help as well, which is good because Joe and the rest of the royal family are trapped in a war zone a million miles away.Oh, and a large group of students have just arrived for horsemanship school, so there will be strangers running all about for days & days. Did I mention that Joe is not there to help so Heather has to rely, a lot, on her autistic brother and stuck-up sister for aid? Yeah, even more interesting than you can imagine. Do they save the day? Read the book and find out :-)

I received this ARC copy from NetGalley and was not sure if I would like it but it quickly drew me in. I was afraid I'd be lost since I'd not read the previous work but the author did a marvelous job with world building. The main character a child killer was also someone I did not think could be at all likable but I ended up caring for and liking him. Amazing work! I look forward to more by this author.
