The investigations in this book stretch students mathematical imaginations to their limits as they investigate the numeration systems of creatures from another planet, create and solve stories and problems with extreme numbers, use place value to design their own new divisibility strategies, and play with a strange kind of number line specially designed to multiply numbers without a calculator. Each activity comes with detailed support for classroom implementation including learning goals, discussion guides, detailed solutions, and suggestions for extending the investigation. There is also a free supplemental e-book offering strategies for motivation, assessment, parent communication, and suggestions for using the materials in different learning environments....

I won this book in one of the Goodreads giveaways, and it took me a while to get to open it. Actually, at first I completely forgot that I had won. When the package arrived, I was promptly reminded :)Thank you GR and the publisher for the opportunity. To be honest, I'm more of an old school mathematician, solving problems the most logical way and shortest way. So when my kids bring home Common Core Math assignments, I often shake my head in amazement at how complicated the simple things have become. They are teaching kids wrong, complicated ways of understanding simple mathematical problems, and, when they learn it, they are often told to do it differently. Times have certainly changed. This, however, has little to do with the book in question. The book in question is, indeed, a great tool to understand what is expected of kids nowadays, and of the way teachers are covering the required material. It offers practical explanations of why are problems covered in specific ways, and it also lists common mistakes. Practice sheets (tests) were a great addition. Recommended to anyone who is confused about the Common Core Math Standards.

Okay I'm old school math and I know this type of math recently implemented in our schools, so I am working on my math skills with this book. I have to give another review after I succeed, if I do! Anyway it is going slow but smoothly since I have teacher's guide to follow. I really like it that the Problem,Questions,Conversations and Solutions is clearly written down for someone like me to follow. I think I can overcome my fear of the common core math, ugh! I won this book on Goodreads First Read Giveaway. Thank you, Darlene Cruz
