On a dare from her best friend, she takes a job as a cigarette and candy girl in San Francisco. Some of her customers are downright scary, others a delight ... all of them high-maintenance and ridiculous. Felix, one of the company drivers that she lusts over, is either coolly distant or unnervingly protective, depending on his mood, but insists he just wants to be "friends." His bravado won't hide his secret for long; Pale's determined to find it out. And if that wasn't stressful enough, the Fates weren't even kind enough to warn her of the worst, still to come. Some answers may lie in a letter from her mother, but how can she trust it won't make things worse?...

As a person who lives in San Francisco, Stockings Required gives an accurate portrayal of the city I love, especially its nights. The story of Pale is wild, deep, and touching to the point where it can be emotionally hard to read, but definitely worth it. The characters in the book are not only well-written and believable, but remind me so much of the personalities that inhabit the city. After reading stories and watching movies of San Francisco only serving as a back-drop, this story of San Francisco and the people working the nightlife is a breath of fresh air. For people who are trying to find their way through life and love San Francisco, it would be a shame to pass up this book. I look forward to reading more from Karryn Nagel.

This book was ok. It wasn't particularly gripping. There is quite a lot in this book that is underdeveloped. I've read half of the book and other than the fact that this girl A) works as a candy girl and B) has the hots for the one guy I could tell you NOTHING about her. Did she go to college? Is she a flake? Does she have a history of finding weird jobs? Was she abducted by aliens so she has a tough time focusing? What the hell?I couldn't tell you. There is no connection to the main character, and there is only so long I will stick with a book whenI don't care if the main character falls off a cliff.I can see some people really liking this book, there just isn't enough here to keep my attention.

3.5/5Overall, a very nice book. The only reason I couldn't give it a full 4-5 stars is because of the lack of conflict throughout the majority of the book. One of the biggest conflicts, which is discussed in the book summary, does not take place until after 3/4 of the book is finished. There was a lot packed in to the last few chapters. None-the-less, I enjoyed reading this book more than I thought I would.

A funny, sexy, adventurous and ultimately heartwarming and tender book. The heroine starts by taking us on a tour of the glitter and decadence of San Francisco nightlife, but her journey gradually becomes an inward one and she must face some challenges she could not have foreseen. The author is a dear friend of mine and I am proud of her for having produced this remarkable first novel.

This book had potential to be a cute piece of chick-lit, giving insight into the behind-the-scenes life of cigarette and candy girls. However, it tried to be too many things at once. There were a lot of loose ends that never really felt resolved, and the story took abrupt turns, making mention of things that could have been important to the plot/development of the main character, but were simply glossed over, seemingly tossed in when the author began to run out of ideas. I wanted to like this book, but it was hard to take it seriously or become connected to the main character or anyone else.

What did I think about pouring my heart and soul, opening up my story to the world, to be squinted at under the cold light of the day star.Like any mother would.
