ARC provided by author for an honest review.Let me start by saying, that the only reason that this is getting two stars and not one, is because there were moments that I thought were hilarious.I have a great respect for anyone with the patience, initiative, drive and daring to write down their passion and put it out there for the public to consume and critic. That being said, this was just terrible. Not because the characters weren't engaging or even a little interesting. But there was so much missing. First was the spelling, grammar and syntax. I'm not a wordsmith, which is why I don't write. I don't remember all the rules of writing from English classes. But I do know that you should either hire or find as many friends, relatives, or goodreads beta readers so that you don't put out a book that has horrible misspelling, missing words in sentences or the same statement in two different places within a couple paragraphs. This is just unacceptable. There were times when I would have to re-read the sentence or paragraph in order to figure out what the author intended to say or figure out where the story was going. The fact that I was extremely busy at work didn't help me keep what was happening straight in my head when I would get back to it. There were moments when the characters would be doing something then in the next moment they were two steps back and doing it again. I was like, "Huh?"Also, I don't mean to be heartless, but I really didn't feel that Karis' issues should have been so insurmountable that she had such a hangup about the truth. Especially when she wasn't telling the truth to herself, her kids or Michael. I get that she'd had a lot of death in her life, but none of it is uncommon or so different from anyone else. I just found it strange that she would push someone away because she was afriad of losing them when she was losing them by pushing them away. Just didn't resinate with me.Then the event that happens with Eve. I really felt that, although it would be great for someone to pull through as she did so quickly, it was completely unrealistic. Maybe after she no longer had the physical affects. And I get that Eve was a ball buster and all out woman about town to begin with. I just felt that the resulting effects were glossed over. Then there's Michael. Now maybe I'm jaded, but to have a basic hound-dog of a man look at a woman and completely change his ways from one look, is also not realistic. Now I know that the period of time they weren't together, he wasn't an angel, but still. The moment he is back in her life he jumps through crazy hoops for her. I just don't know why he does it. It doesn't make sense to me. I like the idea that he did it, but it just didn't feel right. And maybe that was because I spent so much time trying to decipher the writing I couldn't get into his motivation. But it was hilarious in parts as I said before. I would find myself laughing out loud a more than a few times. I thought the romance was sweet and who wouldn't want a guy to fight for you as much as Michael did for Karis, even when she was being a pain? I know I would. I think there was potential, but fell short in so many places that it took away from what was there. Sorry. I hate giving bad reviews, but hopefully the author will take some of the critics into her next offering and move leaps and bounds beyond this.

    * * * * 4 S T A R S * * * *So… a crazy-hot Marine and a sexy feisty widow walk into a bar… Yeah, you had me at Marine! ☺Perfecting the Odds is the sexy story of Michael Finn ~ a Marine turned college professor ~ and Karis Bennett ~ a widow who has decided that love only equals loss and heartache. When these two first meet, they are both at very different points in their lives. Karis is struggling with grief/loss and Michael is just looking for a little bit of fun. They feel an intense and unexpected attraction but life has other plans in store for them. Three years later, they meet again and that’s when the real fun begins! I really enjoyed reading this story! I knew I was going to get “sexy and erotic” but what I didn’t expect was that this story was also funny and emotional. Karis was sarcastic and funny but Eve (her best friend) was truly my favorite. She was raunchy, funny, supportive, and slapped some sense into Karis whenever she needed it. Then, of course, there is Michael… *sigh* He was 100% intense “alpha-male” sexy but he was also sweet, thoughtful, patient, and romantic. The heat between Michael and Karis was intense from the start. The sexual tension and build up made the erotic scenes so much better. You will not be disappointed! What I really liked was how emotional this story turned out to be. When certain events take place and secrets are revealed, the story becomes intense in other ways. I thought the secondary characters really shined when this happened. They moved the story along and kept it from stalling out. Now, the epilogue just sealed the deal for me… loved it! Overall, I thought this was a fun story with interesting twists and great sex! What more could you want?** I received this e-RRC in exchange for an honest review. **

*I was given a copy by the author for my honest review.*A solid 4 stars that was reduced to a 3.50 due to spelling errors, homophone mistakes like towing for toeing and balling for bawling, and most bizarrely missing words in sentences. It sucks all the energy and focus out of the story when the reader has to try and figure out how the sentence was supposed to read. I understand some of these errors may have been rectified, but my review must include them since this is the version I read. Aside from the above, the story started slow but eventually grew on me. I loved Michael and really connected to him. It took a lot longer for me to warm up to Karis (I love her name by the way). Gosh, but she cried alot! Quiet sobs with loads of tears. I understand why, but still it grew really annoying. Also, I loved her son Robby and her bff Eve. I'm not so sure what Eve's calamity added to the story, but I'm glad that was eventually resolved. It sounds like I really didn't like the book, but I DID enjoy it and would recommend it once the editing errors are all fixed. The book is pretty steamy too, and I loved Michael's HOT pillow talk! There was not so much a lie as a piece of info that Michael withheld from Karis and she really went bananas. Once Karis eventually had help removing her head from her ass, I was finally able to relax into the story. And it was worth hanging in there, lots of good things happened and there was a wonderful Epilogue that had me grinning like an idiot.

I was given a copy from the author in exchange for an honest review. If you asked me this morning what I was expecting to think after readingPerfecting the Odds; I would have told you something along the lines of- "probably just another story where the heroine's heart would be torn to pieces as the love of her life slips away and she finds herself in another's arms. With some steamy sex scenes thrown in, perhaps."Facepalm… damn was I wrong! After reading the blurb, I was intrigued by the story line. However, I didn't know what to expect so kept my expectations minimal. Brenna St. Clare did an impeccable job building this story as well as the characters. After reading her bio, I am not one bit surprised that she, too, was an English teacher I really enjoyed how well she integrated literature into the story. The poems and verses she referred to fit perfectly!I found myself laughing out loud as I read (which also earned a few questioning glances from my hubby lol). I think the ice cream date scene was when I'd laughed most. So much wit and sexual innuendos; I loved it! On a personal note: wet nuts?! Is that a regional thing? Because over here in New England, I'm surrounded by ice cream shops and have never seen that on the toppings list ;p Okay, back to the story. I don't know how to explain the progression of the book; it wasn't rushed, but it also wasn't dragged out for pages and pages. It just flowed; flawlessly in my opinion. I never found myself bored or waiting for the next shoe to drop. It all just came naturally. I don't know how to explain it other than it was definitely refreshing compared to novels I've read recently. The only thing that I didn't care for was the perspective. Now, this is purely my opinion based on the writing. It has nothing to do with the story itself and didn't sway my rating by any means. I just was kind of thrown by the use of third person perspective with two character voices. I'm used to first person since third is less commonly used. I had a hard time deciphering who was speaking; Karlis or Michael. Also, a few flashbacks confused me and I had to reread to figure out where it began and where it ended. Again, just my perception issues. Usually I have a hard time connecting with characters that are 30+ considering I'm only 22 and have sisters that age. However I had no problem connecting in this case. A lot of things about this book surprised me. Not only just the story and characters, but the novel as a whole! Needless to say,Perfecting the Odds was a breath of fresh air. Beautiful, emotional, hilarious, shocking... the list goes on!

I received this book for an honest review.Karis is 30 years old, married with two kids. She was orphaned when she was eleven years old when a drunk driver crashed into her patents car killing them on their anniversary. Now, she is sitting in the hospital again waiting on her husband to die of cancer. Karis is so angry at everything and everyone. Her bad luck just keeps following her. She feels she doesn't deserve to love or to be loved because everyone she has ever loved dies.Michael 33 years old a discharged marine who is a college professor of British literature. Charming, sexy, brilliant, loving, kind, and sexy as hell (you will understand the sexy twice comment). He has had his own demons to deal with seven years ago and came out of them a better man. A chance encounter between Karis and Michael leave them both bewildered. Both of them are in an uncomfortable position because they are attracted to one another. Karis feels guilty about her husband and Michael realizes she is the one woman that is completely off limits. Yet, she is the only woman that has stirred his interst in a very long time. In the three years since that first encounter there is just something that neither one of them can forget the other. One fateful Halloween night fate has stepped in and they reunite. Sparks fly immediately and nothing is keeping them apart any longer. Except Karis herself. She wants him. Desires him. Is three years long enough before she starts another relationship ? Karis is everything Michael has ever wanted. All he has wanted for three years. Will Michael's tenacity to get what he has so desired for three years pay off ? Will Karis finally realized she deserves to be happy ?I absolutely adored this book. Yes, there are some sad emotional parts. The quick wit and banter between Michael and Karis is so amusing and refreshing it keeps you entertained through out the book. Eve, Karis' best friend just adds to the humor with her crude and carefree attitude. At times I wanted to slap Karis upside the head for the way she kept pushing and pulling on Michael. Michael is just amazing. How he didn't just take her by the shoulders and shake her is beyond me.My flaw was with the spelling and grammatical mistakes. The story itself is amazing. The missing words in sentences where I had to reread the sentence and fill in words was a bit distracting. Thank you for allowing me to read your book.

I really liked this love story with strong characters and great secondary characters too (praise Karis son, a very wise and mature teen!).Karis is resilient (she's been through her parent's death when very young; husband's death and is raising two kids alone), smart, loves a good banter but she is also angry and tired (who wouldn't be?). Her dad promised to come back and he didn't, her husband hid his illness till too late.Karis, as most women, sees herself full of imperfections, flawed and undeserving of others love. She is mainly scared to love because her loved ones have always left her. So is not willing to open up and take the risk to let someone in.She went through her ordeal thanks to her best friend's help. Said friend, Eve, is a strong and independent woman with no "brain-to-mouth filter".Michael is an English Professor and a Marine (I learned you're never an "ex" Marine like "Marine one day Marine always" ;-)). He too has been through Hell and back (battles, illness). Gorgeous, smart, kind, attentive and compassionate he is in love with Karis but sees himself as flawed and unworthy of her love. It's the story of two people sharing instant connection (love at first sight). But the time was not right and they went their separate ways. Three years later, they meet again, their connection still so strong and Michael will be relentless in his pursuit of Karis. The book was easy to read, I could connect with the characters but the best part (what awarded 4 stars in my point of view) was the last quarter of the book, really intense and emotional and, of course, the happy end.

This book was hibernating on my kindle since the end of May this year, when I got it from Amazon as a freebie...I must admit, I am one of those hoarding-freebies-type... downloading, downloading ´til no end, then indecisive what to read next.So when the author was looking for reviewers some days ago, I offered my services only to find out, I already had it on my e-reader....but did not recognize it because of the different cover! My review will be honest nonetheless!!!It took me some time to wrap my head around this book...but don´t get me wrong!Once I started reading it, I couldn´t put it down.It has all the ingredients one is looking for in an erotic romance. An engaging storyline, a perfect male, steamy sex scenes, even some lovely poems here and there, with which the hero expresses his emotions towards the heroine...and witty banter! I love witty banter and this book provided it!I also loved that they talked during their most intimate moments and it wasn´t just the usual "Ohhh´s "and "Ohhh my God" but the talking emphasized the insecurities the female character was facing.I would have given this book a 5-star rating, but the heroine was a tad too annoying...always pointing out her flaws as though she was constantly fishing for compliments...and too whiny. But the male character could more than compensate this weaknesses! As a side note: my copy of this book had really a lot of typos, missing words, misspelled words and even an inconsistence regarding the age of the heroine´s son. But let´s not forget that this is a debut novel and the storyline makes you look past them!

"Perfecting the Odds" is a love story about a woman dealing with her husband's terminal cancer. Her friend takes her out one night to get her away from the hospital for a little bit. While they are out she meets Michael and tells him her deepest and darkest feelings. Then years later they meet again. Reluctantly she goes out with him, but he is keeping a huge secret from her. Will he reveal the truth to her? And will she stay if he does? I thought this was a really good book! It was one that I just couldn't put down because I wanted to see what would happen next. I liked Michael's character, even though he kept a huge secret from Karis. That secret made me feel really bad for him, but I was very happy for him in the ending. Karis' character was okay. I kept wanting to slap her or shake her to get her to quit making stupid decisions. I have been through a lot more death than she has and I don't push people away like she kept doing. Eve though happened to be my favorite character. I love how blunt she is. I would love to have a friend like her! I really enjoyed this book and I recommend reading it! I can't wait to read more by Brenna St. Clare!

I was lucky enough to be gifted this book for an honest review. I loved it! Karis Bennett is angry. Angry at her husband who is dying of cancer because he did not tell her until it was too late. She is also sad that she is losing her lover, friend, partner and the father of her children. While on a much needed break from her husband's hospital bedside her bff Eve talks her into going out to a bar. There she meets Michael Finn *sigh* and ends up basically telling him her life story and then disappears. For 3 years she thinks of him. Little does she know he is thinking of her too. A chance meeting brings them together again and sparks fly.... Karis is constantly second guessing her choices and feelings while Michael keeps a secret knowing that when Karis finds out he just may lose her. When she does finally hear his secret I cringed. I wanted her to able to accept it but knew that in her state of mind the exact opposite would most likely happen. I was correct! This is a story of love, loss and forgiveness and well worth a read. Bravo Brenna, job well done ;). 4.5 stars

I was so happy to read a steamy book that had a real story line as well. The characters in this book felt real and honest. You could tell that both had their own hang ups, worries, and concerns, yet it was clear that there was an undeniable connection between them as well. This story is mostly about why people try to deny that connection even when they know it will make them completely heartbroken to do so. I enjoyed seeing them struggle with real concerns rather than off the wall things that couldn't really happen to the average person. I also have to say that the fun and humor in the story really made the story so much better. It made the story lighter and more fun to read. Plus, it just added to the fun and witty banter between the Karis and Michael that helped draw me even further into the story and the character's lives. Overall, I thought this was a great read that touched on real life concerns with a light touch of fun and humor.*I received a free copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

**I received a copy from the author for my honest opinion.**I truly enjoyed reading this book because a lot of it I could relate to, like the struggle to date again. Karis had a lot of issue going at the same time with work, family, friends, and beliefs heck I don’t see how see kept a straight head. Michael himself was Mr. To-Good-To-Be-True. Who in their right mind continues to think about the one that got away for years? Okay I get that it’s the storyline be hey I can complain. Honestly I totally enjoyed how their story develops on it on accord. It’s great that the characters weren’t young kids but grown adults with independents lives. That said, Eve was the savior for me because she made the humorous and she had me saying, “I wish I had her balls” I couldn't give it a 5 star rating because I felt like there was so much POV listed in within the book, however it did a great good of giving you his' and hers.

This was an enjoyable read. I was given this book by author for an honest review.Romance with a heroine with a wagon load of baggage. Karis Bennett, teacher, mother and wife to a dying husband is filled with anger. So much so she can't live life to its fullest. I liked Karis, even though she was a butt, she was funny throughout the book. It starts with her getting a break from the bedside of her dying husband and meeting the gorgeous Professor Michael Finn. Who falls in love at first sight. But of course we know its not that easy. The story takes you through the ups and downs of Karis's life and the truth she has to face to be able to live again. This was my first read for this author, but I will be looking for more from her.

I would like to thank the author for giving me the opportunity to review this book. I was very pleasantly surprised. Karis the main character has lived through tragedy after tragedy. Then she meets Michael, beautiful, hot, yummy and extremely patient Michael. I really enjoyed this story. I loved the supporting characters. Eve was a force to be reckoned with. The only thing that bothered me was after a while, it seemed Karis just couldn't get out of her own way, and she started to irk me. But she thankfully redeemed herself and all is right with the world. I would definitely recommend this book. It had a great plot and steamy scenes, and very funny characters.

Really enjoyed this story. The writing was well-crafted, the plot refreshingly new. Karis cracked me up often, and her best friend, Eve, was funny as hell. Michael...well, it doesn't get better than him. He's sexy, dominant, persistent, and hopelessly devoted to their relationship. Did I mention sexy? The sex scenes were exactly what they should be: erotic, descriptive, and fitting for the emotions of the characters at the time of the scene.Definitely recommend.

** I received a copy in exchange for an honest review**I really enjoyed this book. The author did a great job mixing humor, romance, and the right amount of angst to make for a great story. DNFThis book was so tedious. I didn't even make it to the half way point. When did internal monologues become a thing? Just have a real conversation already.
