A Century of Temptation Reviews
3.5I had my eye on this before it was released. Saw the lackluster reviews after it did and I still wanted it because I love vampires, specially gay vampires. There's only a handful yaoi manga with vampires that's licensed too. It was very easy to see why this has sub par reviews. While the art is beautiful the story feels broken or that it lacks effort. There doesn't really feel like there is much depth put into the story and the characters feel like they don't reach their full potential. They fall for each other too quickly, they sleep with each other too quickly with little reasoning behind it. Though there is reasoning. The ending feels unfinished and like you missed out, or rather than the author missed out on a possible great story. With all these missteps why did I give it 4 stars (rounded 3.5)? Well one by default for being yaoi with vampires. Two because I read the whole thing in one sitting. But what really set me up was the commentary at the end where the author says that this story was written in sections and that they feel like outside glimpses of someone's life. That, to me, made lots of sense and as an author that struggles to write consistently I can understand and respect finishing something that contains a sort of twisted hidden beauty if you care to look for it.
This is a very beautiful manga; the art is no doubt among the best out there. But there is a lot missing in the story ...and the reasons behind some vampiric details felt a bit manipulated. While the ending didn't really wrap much up (or there wasn't much to wrap up) ...I actually kinda liked it? It was dark and depressing, though it evoked more emotion out of me then at any other point of the story. I wish the full manga held that kind of power. The talent is there. The characters were interesting. Like another review stated, they didn't reach their full potential. But the fact that I wanted more proves that they didn't fail entirely with their development. They had enough going on to hold my attention, after all.Honestly, it was such good art that I'm happy to have a copy on my shelf. Not sure if I'd recommend it, but I definitely don't regret buying it and giving it my time. I simply wanted more. So if you are considering picking it up, just lower your expectations and buckle up for more art than story. If that sounds good then chances are you can enjoy this one.
