So glad to see another title in this My New Zealand Story series - keep it up, Scholastic! This story is written in the usual diary form by 11-year-old Freda Rose, who lives in a country town in New Zealand. The diary covers the last few months of 1918, looking at the long-term effects of WWI, the celebrations at the end of the war, and the arrival of the killer Spanish Flu. Even though the epidemic only lasted a few weeks, it killed over 8600 people in NZ, of whom a quarter were Maori. Freda grapples with the death of a loved family member - and at the same time has to cope with the return of her brother, injured in the war by mustard gas and suffering greatly. Packed with fascinating details of the time.

I didn't realise this was set in Canterbury when I started reading, and I was reading it over the time of the year it was set as well which was interesting. I learnt some interesting things about parts of Christchurch and Canterbury as an extra to the story of the pandemic. Another good book in an excellent series about New Zealand history.
