Katrina and Winter: Partners in Courage, by Nancy Stewart, is the true story of a girl born with a birth defect that could have limited her life activities, but hasn’t. Katrina, fitted with a prosthetic leg, learns to walk with a limp. She is self-conscious about walking in front of people. On a vacation trip, she meets Winter, a rescued dolphin with a stump of a tail. Like Katrina and her ”helper” leg, Winter wears a prosthetic tail and learns to swim with therapy. Katrina is drawn to this fellow disabled creature and takes away a life-changing lesson from Winter’s example. Katrina vows to be strong and courageous like Winter, and live her life as fully as possible.Throughout the story, whenever Katrina falters or doubts herself, she remembers that Winter never quits and she mustn’t either. Katrina sets and achieves goals that are difficult for kids with two natural legs. She joins the Jump Rope Club, and masters “Double-Dutch.” She overcomes her fear of public viewing to make an educational video with Winter. Katrina joins the 4-H Club. Her accomplishments mount ever higher: gymnastics group, modeling school, horseback riding, voice lessons, song writing. She realizes that she can accomplish whatever challenge she sets for herself. Katrina is an inspiration to anyone with disabilities. She is a role model for special needs kids and anyone who needs to see that problems and handicaps can be overcome. She vows to help other people as she has been helped. She volunteers at local charities and rides in Shriner’s Benefit Horse Shows. Wherever she goes, whatever she does, Katrina never forgets Winter, the special dolphin who inspired her to be strong and courageous. This wonderful true story is sure to be appreciated by anyone with seen and unseen handicaps and disabilities. It is a perfect book for teachers and parents to show kids what hard work and dedication can achieve. The personal photos present Katrina and Winter in real life scenes. When we see them, we are reminded that if “we think we can,” we are on the way to success and can make our own dreams come true. Thank you to Nancy Stewart for bringing us this inspirational story of love, courage, and determination in the face of adversity.

First, a big thank you to Ms. Stewart for the opportunity to read and review this book!Katrina was born with a birth defect and grew up wearing a prosthetic leg. She was very self-conscious about it. One day, her parents take her and her sister to a marine animal rescue and rehabilitation center where she meets Winter, the dolphin without a tail. Winter, like Katrina, has a prosthesis! Katrina feels an immediate connection with Winter, and she knows that somehow, this meeting has changed her life. After going back home, Katrina is determined to try something she never has before - an after school activity - and a jump rope club no less! After she mastered Double Dutch, she told her mom that she just had to see Winter again, which was not easy because she was so far away. After a phone call, Katrina's mom said that the rescue center wanted Katrina to come and do a video with Winter!Winter gave Katrina confidence. After they got to know each other, Katrina went on to do all kinds of wonderful things - she completed modeling school, played basketball, gymnastics, horseback riding, and acted as a role model for people with special needs among other things. This young lady is an inspiration and I very much enjoyed reading about her in Nancy Stewart's book. Her book is targeted to 8-12 year olds, and I think that kids will love reading about this spunky girl who did such amazing things. She includes several real life photographs on every page, which I think kids will also greatly enjoy. A great biography for children!

This is a very special book about a girl named Katrina, who has a 'helper leg', and how her bond with a special dolphin named Winter helped her break out of her shell. Surprisingly, Winter wasn't in as much of the book as I had thought she would be. But Katrina never forgot about the dolphin who originally inspired her from being a shy girl with no confidence who always hid behind her 'helper leg' and let it define her. Then she met Winter, who didn't let not having a tail hold her back from doing anything. Katrina was inspired to do things most girls her age with two 'normal' legs wouldn't even do. She joined every activity she could dream of. She started holding her head high, and speaking up. The transformation was really about more than just becoming used to her helper leg. It was about her inner confidence coming through. Katrina never stops thanking Winter for how much she helped her, and the story comes full circle when Katrina films a video for the aquarium, and people start looking to Katrina herself as an inspiration. If you don't have a chance to meet Winter herself, this story will be inspiring to kids and adults of all ages, and abilities, to overcome obstacles in their own life, just like Winter and Katrina inspire others every day. book sent by publicist and author in exchange for honest reviewreviewed for

Eight-year-old Katrina Simpkins wears a prosthesis or “helper leg” due to a birth defect known as Proximal femoral focal deficiency (PPFA), but she longs to be just a normal girl. Then one day she, her parents, and her older sister Sara visit the Clearwater Marine Aquarium in Clearwater, FL, which is a home for marine animals that cannot be returned to the wild. There she meets and befriends Winter, a dolphin whose tail was caught in a crab trap line when she was just a few months old and has a prosthetic stump instead of a tail. What important lessons can Katrina learn from Winter? And is there anything that Katrina can do for Winter in return? This inspiring true story will be especially helpful to children who are having to deal with various kinds of disabilities, but it will be of general interest to young people all over the world as they read how Katrina comes to cope with her difficulties and change her whole life. Award winning author Nancy Stewart, whose four “Bella and Britt” series books for children are bestsellers, has a talent for reaching children with essential life lessons in the most entertaining ways. In addition, there is a lot of useful information about dolphins and the work of the Clearwater Marine Aquarium. Readers of all ages will take delight in the antics of Winter and will applaud Katrina for the courage that she shows in overcoming a handicap.
