This is Nitta Youka in her prime, her best work ever! Beautiful art down to the last details of every scene, the flow of emotions portrayed, the sexiest men ever, and a plot with lots of intrigue...yakuza style.

I accept that the questionable consent issues and misogyny were a genre theme at the time, but all that aside, the character development isn't handled consistently or well.

Domoto’s accidental discovery of the continuing relationship between Tohru and Matsumi, via evidence left at the scene of a spontaneous tryst in the stairwell, does not bode well. He made it clear to Matsumi that he was not to touch Tohru in that way, and in his eyes the younger man has flagrantly disregarded his instructions. He bides his time and makes his move against Matsumi. When Tohro catches on to the fact that Matsumi is in trouble, he races to his father and wants to use some of the boys to find out where Domoto’s taken Matsumi. His father tells him to be patient, they’re grown men and they’ll work it out. I think this shows that Tohru cares for Matsumi more than he lets on, or he wouldn’t be so concerned about his welfare, and despite his almost cavalier attitude toward the other man at times. This volume concentrates on Tohru and Matsumi’s growing relationship, which is obviously more than just the physical aspects, although they are certainly not suffering in that department either. At the same time, they must deal with their respective roles within the Yazuka organization, and their future, whether they end up together or not. Tohru fears Matsumi becoming a Yazuka because of him, and doesn’t accept that the decision comes from Matsumi’s deep feelings for him. Matsume tries to make him see he’d do anything for Tohru, to be with him. There are forces working against them, and the arrival of Tohru’s cousin Asato only throws oil on the fire. Matsumi thinks there’s more to him than meets the eye, especially when he starts to plant certain ideas inside of Tohru. Who will have the greater influence on Tohru, and who will he trust more? The characters are evolving nicely, and there is definite plot development, as well as plenty of sex. I liked this volume a little better than the first, although I enjoyed that thoroughly. The artwork is beautiful, as always. The sex is hot, and I love the chemistry between Tohru and Matsumi. I can’t wait for the next volume, although there’s no indication when it will be released. Not soon enough for me!

I don’t normally care for stories about mob violence and politics. But this is Youka Nitta’s latest and I need something of hers to tide me over until I can get “Embracing Love” vol. 6 in a hard copy English translation. The complexities of yakuza management and leadership pile up in this second installment and Ms. Nitta handles these subjects with deftness and agility. They lend balance and depth to what might otherwise be a common story of male-on-male love. Not that the yaoi element has been left lacking. The sexual content is smoking, leaping off the page with fiery intensity. However, Tohru is still in denial about any deeper feelings in his “relationship” with Mutsumi. That rejection gives their sexual encounters a bittersweet tone that enriches the storyline and adds delicious complication to their burgeoning emotions. Ms. Nitta understands very well that it takes more than sex to make a compelling story and amply rises to the challenge. Characters, plot, action and her unique style of illustrations make “Starting with a Kiss” a surefire hit.

I could go on and on about how much I love Youka Nitta's style. Some of the panels, especially the sexy stuff between the two main characters are just these incredible moments of well-drawn anatomy and facial expressions. But I also am really enjoying the story here. I normally am not super keen on yakuza stories, but this is written well and not mired down too much in politics and intrigue so far. Umm, really super OMG graphic sex scenes so be forewarned.

For something mafia/yakuza-based, this sure turned out to have alot of funny moments, especially sexually. If you're of the age to view pornographic material in your area, I would definitely recommend it. Good times from the start till the end.----- This volume was provided to me as an eARC by SuBLime (a division of VIZ Media) via Edelweiss. All opinions expressed in this review are my own.

Still good character development but no continuation of the short story from Vol. 1, which I actually truly enjoyed.

This manga is so fabulous. It's like a juicy soap opera drenched in sex and gritty violence. Great if you need an adrenaline rush of lust.
