THE EARL OF RAYNE'S WARD contained a thirtiesh H returning from the Napoleonic War to take over his family's estate since his elder brother had died. There was 'a history' between the elder Drum and 19-year-old Rebecca. When they were much younger, he had let her tag along with him. He thought of her as the younger sister he never had and treated her as such. Patient at times and hopping mad in other moments. Unfortunately, before he immediately signed on as a soldier, they left each other on a sour note.Years go by and then he returns, not prepared for the young woman Rebecca had become. Before long, he shows a possessiveness by ordering her around. Domineering, bossy and just outright rude at times. Always using the excuse that he is 'her guardian'. There was some mild suspense- someone is trying to kill Drum-, a sister-in-law who would love nothing other than for Drum to marry her and, of course, Rebecca's snappishness. But then, who would't take offense at being told what and what not you could do?I rarely have issues with Regency romances if a ward is involved. Hey, it happened. What I don't care for, which this story contained was (view spoiler)[ a mistress and Drum constantly calling and referring to Rebecca as a child. Ick. Icky ick ick. It just didn't ring true. Especially, when he continually watched her. And thought about her. Ick, again. I also wasn't sure if the author intended for the story to be a traditional Regency AKA clean romance or a regular Regency with more modern moments. It was confusing at times. (hide spoiler)]. Hence, the reason for three stars.
