It was a little hard to rate this book. The story was engaging, and for the most part it was entertaining. But thinking about it, there were a few half metaphors sort of thrown in and not properly addressed. There were several times when activities for divisions were pointed out, but not addressed anymore. After reading it, there was a huge feeling of “what's going on? What am I missing?” Aside from that, the ending was disappointing, and the whole last chapter was unnecessary and irrelevant, not to mention boring as heck. In order to really feel that I finished the book, I had to at least SKIM the last chapter, but it kind of left a scum in the brain. It's too bad. There was a fair amount of potential, but it was poorly executed and lost everything. Sad.

This book us is definitely one that you won't be able to put down. From the first page to the end it will keep you guessing. There is a lot going on in this book but it flows so fluently that it's easy to read. The character development is wonderful, as is the plot. Some may say there are things in here that are "too unbelievable", but guess what folks..................It's a Supernatural Thriller and one the best I've read in quite a long time. Sit back, grab a cup of coffee (or tea if you prefer) and read away. Loved every minute of it.

Pretend you're completely lucid. Your family has been broken, you love someone who doesn't love you and you're a policeman on a serial killer case. Now, add a ghostly boy who shows up and, "boom": you're now in a dream. Or are you still in reality? The juxtaposition of real and nightmare are mixed like a cake batter in this nail-biter. It's difficult to reveal too much, so take the trip (but don't read it in the dark!!) Thanks Mr. Bennington, for another chewed-up set of finger nails! LOL!!

A paranormal thriller with heart. Treat yourself to this thriller about a dedicated cop, a little boy with a special talent and the woman that loves them. This was a true surprise; not the writing, I knew that would be great and not the storytelling, I've read books by Jeff before and know his talent for relating and timing the tale.

Rick is a character that I'd like to watch in more stories. The story was engaging and the writer's style was not tiring at all. With all the unfortunate evil events and really sad past background and present conditions, the case is closed leaving you with hope to live on.

When I was scrolling through my twitter feed a while back, a tweet from @TweetTheBook caught my attention, mentioning that Jeff Bennington’s latest book, Twisted Vengeance, was available for free download from Amazon.com. I’d read and reviewed Jeff’s supernatural thriller Reunion for this blog. I really enjoyed that book, so add my previous pleasant experience with his writing and the chance to get a free copy from Amazon, and wham-o, I’m there. You think this is just a typical depressed detective meets serial killer story at first…Rick hasn’t had a charmed life–his mother has been in a nursing home since she fell down the basement stairs when he was a kid, his all-star, hot shot detective older brother was shot and killed two years earlier, his wife left him after their son died, and he’s in love with his sister-in-law (even though he promised his brother that he would never let her marry a cop). His elderly father sticks around the police department as a janitor years after he retired from the force because he wants to watch over his remaining son. As his life seems to get worse while he can’t solve these serial killings of domestic abusers where not even the smallest shred of evidence is left behind, he wallows in self pity and sinks further into depression until a boy pops up out of nowhere to help with the case. And the boy, Benji is mysterious, slippery, and knows way more than anyone should know about the murders–even ones that happened long before the boy was born.Great crime scenes that don’t glance over the details or emotions...Being able to craft a crime scene into words where there isn’t too much or too little gore, the scene is too clinical or void of emotion is a hard thing to get right. Jeff Bennington was able to hit the right blend in Twisted Vengeance. The murders were gripping and real enough for you to picture everything while packing the right emotional punch.Rick spends a good chunk of the book living in the past–not taking the next step with his ex-sister-in-law Stella even though they love each other because of his promise to his dead brother is the prime example. But he seems like he’s just going through the motions of living, not really “being” in the present because it simply hurts too much. And he realizes all of this when it’s almost too late.Supernatural power can lurk where you least expect it…Who or what is Benji? Is he a ghost, a helpful boy that needs to stay hidden, or a ticking time bomb waiting to explode? Or all of the above? The big twist towards the end really surprised me because it went back and forth so much. Sometimes evil lurks in the most unexpected places, and it can be more manipulative and pent up than you might know.Twisted Vengeance is an unpredictable paranormal horror/thriller crime novel. While the first half of the book was paced a little slow, once the paranormal aspects kicked in and you were really left guessing, it kicked into high gear until the fast paced ending. While I personally didn’t like the hand Rick is dealt in the end, it did fit the book perfectly and set things up nicely for a second book in this series. Also posted on Bewitched Bookworms

A human struggle against the paradigm of evilNot for the faint of heart, Jeff Bennington’s ‘Twisted Vengeance’ is a brilliantly crafted tale of deep passions and haunting pasts. It’s these elements that introduce a riveting plot of paranormal twists with well developed characters. This is ultimately a battle of good versus an unknown and seemingly unstoppable evil. Clear some time in your schedule because once Rick starts the hunt, you won’t want to put this book down.SummaryRick is a prisoner of the ghosts of his past but he is forced to face them in order to stop a serial killer. Still clinging to the grief from his brother’s murder two years earlier, Rick will try to live up to Roger’s legacy as a great detective as he follows a twisted path of mangled bodies and no evidence. Rick works the only angle he can find, a mysterious little boy who apparently only he can see. It’s this little boy who brings Rick closer and closer to the source of these brutal murders, putting the detective in grave danger. As he peels back the layers of deception, Rick must look deep to find himself and separate reality from illusion if he’s to survive and put an end to a serial killer bent on exercising its twisted vengeance.ImpressionsWhat I love most about Bennington’s novel, like all of the great ones, is that it gives you a lot to think about while also being highly entertaining. The crux of the issue is how we let our perceptions of the past imprison us – hold us back, and how unraveling illusions sometimes reveal a truth we might prefer left hidden. But ultimately it is the truth that can set us free or crush us if we are unable to bear the weight of the revelation. This story also points out the power of passion, the superhuman abilities that it can imbue for good or evil. It’s the manifestation of this passion, borne from horrific violence, which opens the door for evil to touch our reality.Final ThoughtsI tend to avoid the supernatural – paranormal novels in favor of fantasy or science fiction so this was my first crack at a paranormal thriller and I am grateful I swallowed down my fear and took the leap. It’s a good mix of detective, paranormal, and human spirit. There are more twists and turns than you can count. Bennington did a great job keeping the plot moving without meandering while also keeping you on the edge of your seat without giving anything away. Yes, right up to the very end he’s got you guessing and I loved that about this novel. Toughest part about the experience was writing a review that is helpful to the reader without giving up any spoilers. Even though it’s not my genre, I love the story – the writing – the characters – and the quality of the messages. This is an easy five stars for me and I hope you take the time to read it for yourself.Tom Clementson (Kindle Book Review)

Jeff Bennington’s TWISTED VENGEANCE is a harrowing paranormal crime thriller about Indianapolis PD Detective Rick Burns’ attempt to solve a baffling series of gruesome murders. Burns is unlike the usual hard-boiled detective in crime thrillers. He is an accomplished professional, but also a man struggling with powerful inner issues: the death of a child, an incapacitating injury to his mother when he was a youngster, his brother’s untimely death, a love unfulfilled because of his misplaced sense of duty, a permanent second place finish in his father’s eyes. The appearance of a child named Benji, who seems to inhabit this world and another, provides Burns with his first long-sought clue to solving the murders. As he moves deeper into Benji’s world, Burns fights to retain his sanity and to convince his colleagues, including the woman he loves, that forces beyond anything they can imagine are at work among them. The further I read in the book, the more I found myself thinking about Stephen King’s Carrie. The incendiary power of the energy and anger pent up in Benji ignites the book. But, Benji is not Carrie, he is more multi-faceted, more intriguing, more loveable, more fearful. In TWISTED VENGEANCE, Bennington displays a wide range of writing gifts. He finds a way to meld fast-paced, page-turner action, with introspection. He describes the gore of vicious murders as well as the beauty of a cloud-tinged moon. Bennington dedicates the book to those who have been physically, sexually and emotionally abused, and his characters demonstrate the horrific effects of such abuse across a broad spectrum of people. The only criticism I have is a non-criticism. TWISTED VENGEANCE would have been a powerful book even if Bennington had selected only one or two of his main themes on which to hang the story. That he was able to pack so much psychological dynamite into one novel is a tribute to his artistic vision. I received a free copy of this book as a member of the review panel for Women’s Literary Café. I highly recommend TWISTED VENGEANCE.

Review of Twisted VengeanceBy Jeff BarringtonI am always blest to open a book and find my attention captured from the first page. Almost all writing courses and how-to books recommend use of the “reader’s hook,” by which an author captures the reader’s attention and never lets go; but honestly, not every writer seems to manage this. “Twisted Vengeance” accomplishes it in spades-from first page on, escalating the fear, the terror, the suspense, the mysteriousness of “reality”-this is a can’t-be-put-aside novel. The Supernatural and paranormal elements are intertwined so well that they seem not only possible, but even realistic and factual. Suspension of disbelief is no problem here. I love this book, but I have to say-it is not for the faint of heart nor the easily queasy of stomach. I’ve been reading horror, mystery, suspense, Supernatural, and paranormal for about 5.5 decades (plus watching horror films and TV about that long), and I thought I’d pretty much read everything gory and gruesome (think Graham Masterton), but “Twisted Vengeance” had me shaking my head in shivers and revulsion at some of the death scenes (I can think of at least one I’ll never erase from my mind). However, let that be no reason to avoid a great book like this one!

INCREDIBLE PARANORMAL TWISTI have to say, this is the best book I have ever read involving paranormal. Once I finished this unbelievable novel, I felt the same way I did after seeing the movie, Sixth Sense. The end took me by surprise and I love surprises.I see now why, author, Jeff Bennington wanted me to read this exciting, mind bending, action packed novel. He knows how much I love all his ghostly writings and this one blew me away!Child and spousal abuse are taken to a whole new level of vengeance. Some of the truths revealed to Rick in the end, leave him in a state of shock and I was shocked as well.I love twists and turns in the novels I read and this one was certainly full of those. You will find yourself wanting the one responsible for deaths and child abuse, dead in the worst way. I was nearly shouting at my kindle for the protagonist’s life to be spared.I highly recommend this novel, not only to those readers who love paranormal, but to all. This novel will not disappoint you if you like reading Jeff Bennington’s works. He has outdone himself on this one.~Rebecca Scarberry with The Kindle Book Review

Twisted VengeanceBy Jeff BenningtonIntroduction:The author manipulates the beginning, middle, and ending of the storyline in a way that draws the reader into the plot. The promise to the reader in my opinion; is a tantalizing view into the mind of detective burns as he investigates crime scenes in order to catch a killer. You get a since that the mood of the story is dark and menacing. The beginning definitely reels you into the story, with great anticipation.Genre: ThrillerMain Characters:Detective Burns, Sergeant Gains, Mrs. Bertrum, Stella, and little boy.The author is successful in painting the gruesomeness of the crimes by the use of graphic imagery. The milieu of the setting is convincing, and sometimes unsettling. This adds to the reader’s anticipation and fuels the need to turn the page.Overall, I was not disappointed the author fulfilled his promise. I was both intrigued and tantalized. I would definitely, recommend the book. On a side note, be prepared to have a conversation with self at the end…

***I usually don't give spoilers to books that I read but I am giving one to this book. If you are wanting to read this book then don't read this review because it will give away the ending.****************You start out following a detective who has been investigating these murders where there is no evidence and no way that a human could have killed them because how each of them was killed. He starts to see a boy that through most of the book I assumed was a ghost because how he acts and some of the things that he does through out the book. He slowly starts to put the pieces together but I never saw the ending coming. I fell in love with this book and the ending made me sad. I wanted the detective to end up with everything that he work for through out the book. It broke my heart that the little boy died and so did the lady that he fell in love with. I usually think books are good but the endings don't usually affect me but this time they did. I am still sad knowing how it all ended.I do recommend this book to anyone who wants to read a good Thriller.

Twisted Vengeance follows a police detective as he connects a series of gruesome deaths. Protagonist Rick Burns gets a break on a two year backlog of unsolved cases when he is contacted by a tight-lipped juvenile witness. As a character piece, Twisted fell short, despite a roll call of supporting roles: the sibling rival, the protective father, the buddy cop, and the unattainable love interest. Burns reads like an assembly of traits without a soul binding them together, or an ethereal presence defined as the negative space between other members of the ensemble cast, the guy who is the buddy of the buddy cop, and the younger brother of the heroic older brother. When the story turns to paranormal mystery, Bennington finds his voice. Twisted Vengeance surprised me with some deliciously creepy scenes. Though I was never engaged by the detective's peril, the mystery made it worth the read.

Twisted Vengeance was a pretty good book. I especially enjoyed the first half -- building up the mystery. I knew what was going to happen at some parts, but others surprised me. It was all very suspenseful and I didn't want to put it down. The only complaint I had was over the ending. It wasn't so much the way the book ended, but I felt like a few of the details didn't really add up. I can't really go into specifics without spoiling the plot, but some of the murders didn't really match up with the time frame. I think it was one of those endings that was kind of aimed to shock and surprise you, not something that made you go "Oooh, I get it!" Still, great book.

Twisted Vengeance by Jeff Benington is a detective story that is dark, gritty and definitely twisted. Usually part of the enjoyment I derive from reading a detective-thriller murder mystery is figuring out who did the deed. However, with Mr. Benington’s mystery I was completely twisted in knots by the terrifying turns within the story. This book is not for the faint of heart. Escalating horrific, brutal murders rip away illusions and perceptions leaving you staring at a bloody train wreck you from which you cannot pull away. http://jeans-ereading.blogspot.com/

Giveaway Win from Goodreads. This was a very interesting book and I enjoyed it very much. I didn't expect it to end like it did and I'm still appalled, on the other hand, the plot was very well written and the twists had a lot of spiraling to them. I didn't know what to expect in the beginning of how this story would end up, and I'm glad I won the book.Jeff did a wonderful job writing this novel and I look forward to his other novels.

Interesting story, but the language struck me as if English was not this author's first language, or that maybe a bright child wrote it. I only finished it so I could read phrases to my husband for the laughs - many of the descriptive passages were hilarious. I was very disappointed after seeing all of the positive reviews. To each his own, I guess : )

Very good book, I couldn't put it down once I started reading. All the twists and turns keep the reader guessing and the story line is well written and interesting. It's easy to get caught up in the characters and loose track of time with this one. I highly recommend this one for a quick summer read that will give you chills on a hot summer day.

Twisted Vengeanceis dark – and gritty – and scary, and not something I would normally read. Credit to Jeff Bennington for infusing the perfect complement of introspection and self-reflection. That Bennington could explore the human condition within this captivating thriller is proof of his writing talent. Jeff Bennington is an author to watch.
