Was thrown out of a bookshop as a child for screaming at the monsters.

27months - this book belonged to my step-son who was very much into spooky things. I read to him a lot but I don't ever remember cracking this book open. Today my daughter and I sat down to read this and two things really hit me about this book. First wow very cool pop-ups! Secondly there is no story. This one would have been better if the words were excluded. Very fun to look at and talk about, skip the text. If I could I'd rate illustrations 5 stars and story 0.

I just randomly found this book buried in my closet. Okay, this book was amazing! Not only were the pop-ups so much fun, but the story... omg the story! At first its just like "okay whatever, there's a haunted house and a doctor, okay." But after reading it several times it started to get creepy. Seriously, that cat was stalking the doctor. And yes, he most likely ate him!! I don't know why, but I love this book! One million stars! :)

This is just a fun Halloween book, full of colorful pop up pictures and little surprises. I loved this book when I was a kid and I still enjoy it today when I read it to my own kids. I recommend this book to anyone who finds humor in silly Halloween stories.

Jan Pienkowski, Haunted House (Candlewick, 2005)Fun pop-up with a few surprising/inventive uses of the technique (though when considering my use of “inventive”, also consider that I'm 42 and thus was most immersed in pop-up culture back in the early seventies). Would have preferred something a little closer to a story, but as a simple piece of art, it does its thing. Check it out of the library before deciding whether to add it to your permanent collection to see if the lack of story affects the kiddies' desire for repeated exposure. *** ½

I think I had this book in French. Think mom and dad bought it on a trip in Paris when I was a wee one. I can only imagine they bought it for the pop-up quality. However 10+ years later when I found it in English you can imagine my delight in being able to finally read the story!

This is one of the best pop-up books I have ever seen. My kids really love it! It is well worth buying, especially around Halloween!

You just can't have too many creepy pop-up books. This one is great for those of a morbid bent.

Jan Pienkowski's pop-up books are among my favorites. Think of them as toys for book-obsessed adults with poor control over the inner child.

This is a just-for-fun visual feast of a book for Hallowe'en. While there is minimal text, there is not really any story, but the pop-up thrills and spills are the real shine. A gorgeous, handle-with-care book to enjoy.

This book would have gotten one star, but pop-ups are just too much fun! I really do like the pop-ups and I would have rated this book higher if the story made any sense at all. Actually, it didn't need to make sense, it could have just been a tour of the house, but the text that was there was confusing and rather useless. Doctor? Huh? I saw neither the doctor or the person/thing the doctor was there to see. I don't know why the doctor was called. It's as though the rest of the story was in the author's head and it didn't make it to the page.

Loved this as a small child! The pop-ups were a bit large and cartoonish for me (when compared to another and legitimately creepy haunted house pop-up book I'd owned prior to this one and played with until the pop-ups were worn and semi-detached). But some of the pop-ups are very elaborate and creative. I still own both books at 29-years-old, by the way.

This book scared the bejesus out of me as a child, and yet I kept it in my collection for some time. It was a pop-up book, with various types of strange and spooky monsters and weird stuff (an octopus in the bathroom, a saw coming out of a door, a spaghetti monster in the kitchen). Eventually I decided I would prefer not to have it around any more, and I got rid of it.

If anyone wants to know why I enjoy all things scary you need look no further than my parents. Because of their unprecedented abilities of child rearing. How can you combine those two words and not chuckle? they saw fit to make sure this title was on my bookshelf as a tot. The results are before you.

Classic pop up book with lots of moving parts and colour. Most of the creatures are smiling so little ones who might be afraid usually are not. While I bought if for the two year old, the five year old doesn't leave it alone.

The plethora of pop-up adventures and exquisite turny things was admittedly distracting from the one line of prose captured on each page, but I was entertained and would recommend it. To those under three years old. (It was a white elephant present.)
